Sylvia Eileen, Lady Hermon (born 11 August 1955) is a unionist politician and Member of Parliament for the Northern Ireland constituency of North Down.
Born Sylvia Eileen Paisley in Castlecaulfield, Dungannon, County Tyrone, she studied at Dungannon High School before studying Law at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (obtaining a First) and went on to lecture in Law at the Queen's University of Belfast at the same time as David Trimble.
Hermon became Chair of the North Down branch of the UUP in 2001 and held this position until 2003.

For republicans, Jack Hermon will be remembered for his role as Chief Constable at a time of shoot-to-kill policies and collusion with unionist paramilitaries but it didn’t make Gerry or Martin any less republican to behave towards his wife, Sylvia, in the manner they did.
Republicans have a humanity, derived to a large extent from the suffering our community has experienced - often at the hands of the RUC - but also because republicanism is about an objective, an ideal, a better way of life.
Maybe if David Trimble, like Sylvia Hermon, had been a bit more gracious in his dealings with republicans and hadn’t tried to mimic his unionist rivals he would have achieved much more and we might all be in a very different place today.

Lady Hermon's faith in the "very positive consequences" of ID cards is hard to understand given the public sector's dismal track record in database administration.
There is no valid reason to believe that the ID computer database, which is intended to include over three billion personal details of UK citizens, will fare any better.
