Sympathetic strings have been used on instruments for hundreds of years, and by many different cultures.
There is an internal damping mechanism for the sympathetic strings, operated by a small lever protruding from the upper left side of the sound-hole.A small movement of this lever with the thumb of the right hand easily turns the sympathetic strings on or off.
Replacement of sympathetic strings is accomplished by threading the new string in through it's tiny hole in the main bridge, then pulling it through the neck with a special tool.

The other irritant is that although the hook will pull the string down somewhat and move it out of the way, it usually still gets struck while doing chikari and I personally like my chikari sound to include bronze Sa wire tone.
After all this, if you decide to have the bass sa string in your sitar, and you make a hook etc, you will do well to practice your chikari with great patience and precission so your accuracy keeps this string mostly out of the fast chikari playing.
The thing to remember is to have different types of tuning beads on each string so that you can recognize the string being tuned by the touch of your fingers.

When changing the strings, be sure to lightly sand the areas where the strings seat with emory cloth...this might still make a difference.
These are sympathetic vibrations caused by the exact same G wavelengths played an octave higher.
Some instruments are more responsive in the sympathetic range than others...for instance, flat style mandolins with oval holes and a thin matte finish will have more sympathetic vibrations than let's say a mandolin with f soundholes and a thick gloss finish.
