Sympathomimetics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sympathomimetics are a class of drugs whose properties mimic those of a stimulated sympathetic nervous system.
Sympathomimetics include the naturally occurring substances adrenaline (epinephrine), noradrenaline (norepinephrine), and other catecholamines such as dopamine, as well as the synthetic drugs pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, and phenylpropanolamine.
In medicine, they are commonly prescribed in cardiac emergencies including shock and anaphylaxis, in some cases for weight loss, and in cold remedies, where they shrink swollen membranes in the upper respiratory tract.

Sympathomimetic amines are contraindicated in patients with severe hypertension, severe coronary artery disease and patients on monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor therapy.
Sympathomimetic amines should be used judiciously and sparingly in patients with hypertension, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, hyperthyroidism, increased intraocular pressure, and prostatic hypertrophy.
Sympathomimetic amines have been associated with certain untoward reactions including fear, anxiety, tenseness, restlessness, tremor, weakness, pallor, respiratory difficulty, dysuria, insomnia, hallucinations, convulsions, CNS depression, arrythmias, and cardiovascular collapse with hypotension.

sympathomimetic drug[simpath´´Omimet´ik] Pronunciation Key, any of a group of substances whose actions resemble the response of stimulated sympathetic nerves (see nervous system).
These drugs include epinephrine and other catecholamines that are naturally produced in the body, and chemically similar substances such as ephedrine.
Sympathomimetic drugs excite the central nervous system and heart and affect the diameter of blood vessels.

eMedicine - Toxicity, Sympathomimetic : Article by Paul Kolecki, MD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
In most cases, clinical poisoning by one sympathomimetic agent is indistinguishable from that of a second sympathomimetic agent with a different mechanism of action.
Some of the illegal sympathomimetic agents are more commonly abused by the inhalational route (eg, crack cocaine, methamphetamine) or the IV route (eg, cocaine, methamphetamine, methcathinone) than by the oral route.
Sympathomimetic toxicity is frequently associated with significant agitation, thus necessitating the use of physical restraints and chemical sedation.

A method was developed that permitted rapid identification in urine of the following sympathomimetic amines: amphetamine, benzphetamine, cathinone, desmethylsegiline, diethylpropion, ephedrine, fenfluramine, mazindol, methylenedioxyamphetamine, methylenedioxyethylamphetamine, methylenedioxymethamphetamine, mescaline, methamphetamine, methcathinone, methylaminorex, methylphenidate, pemoline, phendimetrazine, phenylepherine, phentermine, phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine, and selegiline.
Those sympathomimetic amines containing a primary or secondary amine, a hydrazine, and/or hydroxyl (except mazindol) functional groups were derivatized effectively using an on-column derivatization technique that used a reagent consisting of 10% fluoroanhydride in hexane, whereas the other sympathomimetic amines, including mazindol, were analyzed underivatized.
Fragmentation ion abundance was maximized at an injection-port temperature of 260°C, and this enhanced sensitivity coupled with the better chromatographic resolution of the individual sympathomimetic amines prompted the selection of HFBA as the derivatizing agent of choice.

The classic effects of a sympathomimetic are increase in cardiac output and vasoconstriction which together cause an increase in blood pressure.
The term sympathomimetic carries connotations that alert physicians to a spectrum of safety issues including abuse potential, insomnia, and cardiovascular actions.
This has significant implications for the safety of SIBUT and potential long-term changes in sympathetic tone with regional specificity, the sort of phenomenon that may underlie primary pulmonary hypertension and irregular perfusion of the heart by carotid arteries.

In order for "indirect" acting amines such as tyramine to exert their effects, they must first be taken up by the monoamine reuptake system and then release norepinephrine from storage granules.
These agents produce a physiologic response that is similar to the response produced by exogenous norepinephrine ("sympathomimetic").
Tyramine is an indirect sympathomimetic which works by releasing endogenous catecholamines from nerve endings.
