Symphonic poem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A symphonic poem or tone poem is a piece of orchestral music, in one movement in which some extra-musical programme provides a narrative or illustrative element.
Richard Strauss (who preferred the term "tone poem" to "symphonic poem") was one of the most prolific late Romantic composers in the genre, with his works including Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel, Also sprach Zarathustra, Don Quichote, and Ein Heldenleben.
Because of their non-orchestral nature, these are not considered to be "symphonic poems", although in all aspects other than instrumentation, they resemble one.

Symphony - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The early three-movement form was eventually replaced by a four-movement layout which was dominant in the latter part of the 18th century and throughout most of the 19th century.
This symphonic form was influenced by Germanic practice, and would come to be associated with the "classical style" of Haydn and Mozart.
At the same time a more experimental form of symphonic writing was coming into being, featuring a greater number of symphonies with textual meaning or specific programs.

Symphonic rock is a style of rock music that incorporates elements from classical music.
Symphonic rock had its highest popularity in the 1970s, but around 1980 lost in popularity, possibly because of the rise of punk (the simplistic punk and complex symphonic rock might be considered opposites).
Symphonic rock is also very closely identified with progressive rock, and may be considered a sub-genre.

Symphonic black metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Symphonic fl metal has the same components as melodic fl metal but a lot more orchestral pieces, mostly during the entire length of the song, mixed with the fl metal element.
This sub-genre of fl metal has gained much criticism from fl metal purists who argue that it is a watered down version of the real thing.
Symphonic fl metal often can be confused with Norwegian Gothic Metal and there are some bands who are classified as both (Cradle of Filth or Summoning for instance).

AllRefer.com - symphonic poem (Music: Theory, Forms, And Instruments) - Encyclopedia
Although the symphonic poem better expressed the spirit of romanticism than did the symphony, it did not supersede the symphony; many composers, e.g., Tchaikovsky, Saint-SaEns, Sibelius, Franck, and DvorAk, wrote in both forms.
In the symphonic poems of Smetana and Sibelius an element of nationalism is added.
Influenced by Alexander Ritter's tone poems, Richard Strauss, in, for example, Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche (1895), carried the programmatic possibilities to an extreme of realism, in contrast to the impressionistic tone poems of Debussy, such as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faune (1894), which are closer to the Lisztian concept.
