  Black metal music
Black metal generally consists of heavily distorted, extremely fast guitar playing, screamed vocals, and fast drumming.
Black metal congealed in its current form through the influence of Norwegian bands such as Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Immortal and Emperor, who began with the earlier style and introduced elements from mainstream heavy metal, classical music and hardcore punk and popularized the style to a growing underground audience.
Black metal enthusiasts also started to terrorize other notable "death metal" bands that were touring their country or in neighboring countries, on the basis of their lack of apparent "evilness".

The starting point for symphonic fl metal was the early-'90s sound of Norwegian fl metal, specifically the wing of bands that employed sorrowful, melodic keyboard lines as a counterpoint to their furious assaults.
Black metal groups looking to push past the inherent limitations of the form began de-emphasizing the guitar and adding elements of progressive rock (primarily psychedelic space-rock bands like Pink Floyd) and goth metal, with its emphasis on chilling, eerie texture.
The symphonic fl metal movement remains somewhat limited, partly because of its epic ambitions and partly because it isn't traditionally metallic, but its fascinating synthesis of influences made it an instantly identifiable alternative in underground metal at the turn of the millennium.

One of the standout grindcore/death metal bands of the end of 80's, Carcass gained notoriety for their liberal use of medical terms in their lyrics and song titles (in fact, it was reported by reliable sources that the band members were med students, which wasn't true).
One of the more storied bands in metal, the band known simply as Death is recognized as one of the most influential bands in the field of death metal.
The Canadian death metal scene has been thriving for a number of years, and Kataklysm is that scene's oldest and most recognizeable name, having formed in 1991 and releasing a slew of successful albums during the course of their career.

Their 2004 demo really caught me by surprise, as most fl metal bands hailing from the U.S. are dominantly pure, raw, apocalyptic blasphemy, or one of the hundreds of "kvlt" bands flooding the scene.
While they certainly are not reinventing the wheel, Sothis do justice to the symphonic fl metal leaders they are so sorely emulating, and for rookies, their presentation is very professional.
They use a more modern fl metal sound with the strong guitars, yet still retain a very dark emotional feel…which is enforced by the insane battery driving it on.

While Helveteshymner is a very solid fl metal album, it does not test any new waters nor does it try to do anything beyond what Darkthrone has been doing for the last couple decades.
Rather then having a poor quality recording as one might expect from a traditional fl metal band, Helveteshymner is distinctively rough sounding, though clear enough for one to hear the guitars, drums and vocals very well.
If you’re into more fl thrash style fl metal acts like Immortal, symphonic fl metal like Dimmu Borgir, or are just getting into fl metal, this album is not particularly inviting or easy to get into.

Band Names Not Brand Names » REVIEW: Wallachia - From Behind the Light
The focus of the music is symphonic fl metal with a good bit of folk influence and deep death growls.
At the time of release, true symphonic fl metal was still a young genre and this is definitely a pioneer release of it with a lot of atmosphere and keyboard-driven interludes in the tracks.
It’s not often that you’ll come across a fl metal band that is midtempo and isn’t intermixing doom into their music, and for this I respect Wallachia’s efforts in the then young genre.

Sear Bliss - 'Forsaken Symphony' review @ into-obscurity.com[enter the underground]
They create atmospheric, symphonic fl metal, but unlike most of the standout bands of this genre, they keep the music relatively primitive, and avoid the flamboyant use of keyboard enhancement.
The selling point, in my opinion, for "Forsaken Symphony", is it's ability to teeter on the edge of both being a symphonic fl metal album or a primitive fl metal masterpiece.
The ability of Sear Bliss to pull this off without overdoing either of the two styles, therefore becoming either boring and unbearable (in the case of primitive fl metal) or happy sounding (in the case of the symphonic fl metal) is commendable.

Metal Reviews - Metal Coven Webzine - Metal Reviews - Dragonlord - Black Wings Of Destiny
For a while, I thought Dragonlord to be a one-off symphonic fl metal project for Eric Peterson to pass the time while Testament was on hiatus.
While most symphonic fl metal groups have a hard time deciding whether or not to sacrifice thick sound for space symphonics, Dragonlord allows the music to strike with dense, audible layers.
"Black Wings of Destiny" is a far superior release when compared to "Rapture." And when compared against the two giants of the symphonic fl genre, Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir, "Black Wings" easily eclipses both bands last three offerings.

Thyrane is one of those bands that have the advantage of being well known in the underground before they are signed to a label.
Now the thing that I like about this band, Is that they use some symphonic elements on their music but they don't abuse it like some bands do.
If I had known about this band back in the day I would have expected them to become one of the top acts in today's fl metal scene but unfortunately after releasing more albums they turned into something similar to the Kovenant, which is quite sad.

All in all this is an album that might be liked by the fans of symphonic fl metal and music with a haunting, gothic horror atmosphere.
Celestial Crown hail from Estonia and play a form of melodic doom metal that is well known from other bands that feature a combination of slow to mid-tempo metal and keyboards.
But, with everything said and done, this is a promo, and the overall quality reflects that, as the release on the whole does not reach the level of most established bands in the same vein.

These days, a fl metal enthusiast who doesn't have any Scandinavian bands in his or her collection is sort of like a blues lover who doesn't listen to any artists from Chicago or a gangsta rap fan who ignores MCs from the West Coast.
Clearly, these Americans favor the harsher and nastier side of fl metal; The World, the Flesh and the Devil is one album that will never be mistaken for symphonic fl metal, an ambitious style that combines fl metal elements with the melodic intricacy of power metal and even progressive rock in some cases.
Some of the bands that are considered symphonic fl metal can honestly claim Pink Floyd and Yes as influences, but Kult Ov Azazel are the exact opposite -- their non-symphonic approach to fl metal thrives on merciless bombast and is unapologetically blistering.

While it originated in the Norwegian fl metal scene, symphonic fl metal quickly spread across Europe after its introduction in the mid-'90s, expanding upon the dramatic, dark soundscapes of early '90s bands like Norway's Emperor and Britain's Cradle of Filth.
This opened the door for more female-fronted bands, most notably the Italian gothic metal group Lacuna Coil and the Swedish thrash-influenced ensemble Arch Enemy.
On the whole, symphonic fl metal embraces a greater emotional diversity and more elaborate song structures than the more homogenous fl metal scene that spawned it.

The atmosphere is incredible, rarely does a fl metal band get the type of dark, and ancient atmosphere that Dimmu have conjured up for this album.
Although I would never consider them “true Norwegian fl metal” and sound nothing like original fl metal (just like Venom sounds nothing like Mayhem but they are still fl metal), they have taken a great spin on it.
They may not be fl metal by some people’s definitions but they play damn good dark as hell music.

Limbonic Art was a fl metal duo consisting of Daemon and Morpheus, though early versions of the band featured four members in all.
They played adventurous, symphonic fl metal, clearly rooted in the tradition of Emperor and the like, but with greater dynamics and range, featuring complex arrangements and clear classical music influences to create a rich, dynamic, yet still inherently fl metal style.
During their six-year run between 1997 and 2002 they were prolific recording-wise, releasing five albums of relatively uniform style and quality, though not without progression and maturation on the later material.

A bit boring and typical symphonic fl metal is performed by FORLORN.
The influences from DIMMU BORGIR are more than evident and the band does not differentiates itself a bit from the rest of melodic fl metal bands, though the musicianship is not bad.

Additionally, Cynicon are not afraid to pull back into an almost minimalist form of symphonic fl metal, often removing the guitars and keyboards entirely, leaving only bass and drum for vocalists Ellien and Cyon to sing or growl over.
But in an age where many composition-oriented fl metal bands grow thick with layers and orchestration, it is quite intriguing to hear a band that isn't afraid to go the opposite route.
On one side, "Cybernetic" is extreme metal in the vein of symphonic fl metal, nothing too extraordinary or different from all the other bands I have compared it to.

BNR Metal Pages -- Tyrant   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
This Tyrant is a Japanese fl metal band, who on their debut album (1997's Under A Dark Mystic Sky) nails the early Norwegian symphonic fl metal style (think early Dimmu Borgir as one reference point) to a T -- indeed, it's probably one of the most Norwegian-sounding albums from a band not from Norway.
By the time of Legend, released five years later, the band had matured and developed a bit -- still very much rooted in symphonic fl metal, but with a less harsh style, with the more dominating keyboards giving the band a more melodic edge.
Tyrant has yet to truly branch out and discover their own style, (perhaps their new Grimoires, released in 2005, will establish a unique identity), but for traditional symphonic fl metal, both Legend and Mystic Sky are accomplished and recommended listens.

Taiwan’s premier (only?) corpse paint clad, symphonic fl metal band return with album number four finally seeing a stateside release, and its what you’d expect; polished Cradle of Filth worship with hints of Asian ethnicity by way of the Er-Hu and the deep Taiwanese story of historical hero Monorudao.and the Seediq tribe.
There’s no real surprises here as ChthoniC continue to be very adept purveyors of symphonic and melodic fl metal with a great production, impressive atmospheres and decent song writing.
