Symphonie Fantastique - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Symphonie Fantastique (Fantastic Symphony) is a symphony written by Hector Berlioz in 1830.
The symphony is a piece of program music which tells the story of "an artist gifted with a lively imagination" who has "poisoned himself with opium" in the "depths of despair" because of "hopeless love." There are five movements, which was unconventional for a symphony at the time:
Leonard Bernstein called this symphony the first musical expedition into psychedelia because of its hallucinatory and dream-like nature, and because history suggests Berlioz composed at least a portion of it under the influence of opium.

 Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique
The Symphonie Fantastique was initially composed in 1830 and first performed in December of the same year under the direction of Habeneck.
The long third movement is the musical heart of the symphony, as well as the pivotal point in the drama: from the world of imagined reality in the first three movements the music moves to the world of imagined nightmare in the last two.
The movement recalls the Pastoral Symphony, written in the same luminous key of F major, and there are intentional echoes, notably the discreet allusions to the bird song of the end of the second movement of the Pastoral Symphony in bar 67 and following.

The author imagines that a young musician, afflicted by the sickness of spirit which a famous writer has called the vagueness of passions (le vague des passions), sees for the first time a woman who unites all the charms of the ideal person his imagination was dreaming of, and falls desperately in love with her.
If the symphony is performed on its own as a concert piece this arrangement is no longer necessary: one may even dispense with distributing the programme and keep only the title of the five movements.
Three movements of the symphony, the Ball, the March to the scaffold and the Witches’ sabbath caused a sensation.

Notes on Symphonie Fantastique (Hector Berlioz)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The classical symphony, the symphony of Haydn, Mozart and the young Beethoven, with its succession of movements in contrasting moods had always carried with it vague suggestions of narrative content.
In his Third Symphony, the Eroica, the would-be storyteller can only be embarrassed by Beethoven's decision to mourn and bury his heroic figure in a somewhat premature second-movement funeral march.
The asymmetrical quality of his melodies is one of the distinctive features of Berlioz's musical imagination; in the Symphonie fantastique, the long-breathed, unpredictable melodic lines give the work a decidedly discursive feel, something of a musical metaphor for the work's literary intentions.
