Symphony No. 41 (Mozart) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote the Symphony No. 41 in C major (K.
A remarkable characteristic of this symphony is the five-voice fugato (representing the five major themes) at the end of the fourth movement.
In Woody Allen's 1979 film, Manhattan, his character regards the 2nd movement of the symphony to be one of the reasons why life is worth living.

 Mozart - Symphony No. 41 in C Major K.551 "The Jupiter" - bhso.org.uk
Interestingly, despite the powerful impact this symphony engenders, Mozart chose not to include that "recently" invented and developing instrument, the clarinet which he had included in the orchestration of the previous two.
Mozart now works upon this "stolen" theme in sequences and when it has been well used it leads the proceedings back to the movement's opening music, which is now in F Major, and continues rather stormily until pianissimo bars lead into the recapitulation, which is in C Minor.
The "development" does not show Mozart at his most charming as he works at the five themes of the exposition polyphonically and with a series of canons, all of which add a turbulence to the music as it proceeds, but it begins to settle as the recapitulation approaches.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Symphony 41
The Symphony no. 41 is known as the Jupiter Symphony, a title not granted it by its creator.
The symphony is Jupiter-like in another way, too, for it is frequently jovial, as if the Greek god himself were laughing heartily in the celebratory key of C major.
Mozart's Forty-first Symphony proved inspirational to many composers, especially Haydn, who modeled his 95th and 98th symphonies on the Jupiter.

Symphony No. 40 in G Minor forms the centerpiece of the "final trilogy." It is a work of complex character, one whose music embodies passion and formal elegance, sorrow and exultation, darkness and light.
Mozart's brilliant use of counterpoint, the simultaneous sounding of different melodic strands, makes the finale of his "Jupiter" Symphony one of the outstanding musical achievements of the Classical period.

NPR : Mozart's Last Symphony: The Giant 'Jupiter'
All Things Considered, January 27, 2006 · Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last symphony, the Jupiter Symphony (No. 41), was written along with two other, full-length symphonies in the summer of 1788 -- in just six weeks.
Mozart uses five different melodies simultaneously in the Jupiter, making it a challenge for any orchestra that takes it on.
Mozart had recently been idolized all over Europe for operas such as Don Giovanni and for his spectacular performances of his own piano concertos.

Mozart’s tonic-dominant figures, and especially his finale theme (the most commonplace tag of 18th-century contrapuntal practice), are as clearly traditional in origin as are Beethoven’s C-Major scales and arpeggios in the last movement of his Fifth Symphony.
The symphony’s beginnings go back to the stressful days after Schumann’s death that also saw the conception of the First Piano Concerto (whose opening movement was originally intended as part of a symphony) and the Deutsches Requiem.
He composed Symphony No. 1 in 1854 and 1876; it was first performed on November 4, 1876, in Karlsruhe, and revised in the following year.

Mozart: Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K. 551 (Jupiter)
Haydn's sponsor Salomon, apparently, was the person who first called it the "Jupiter" symphony, and Mozart's son thought it "the highest triumph of instrumental composition." The first movement bubbles over with thematic material, much like the Concerto K. 503 (also in C major), establishing the bold dimensions of the work as a whole.
Revel in the C major-ness of this last Mozart symphony: grand and bright, regal, triumphant.
It's a particular kind of sound, altogether different from the atmosphere of the G-Minor Symphony.

 SLU News-LPO-Mainly Mozart
The night comes to a close with Mozart’s “Symphony No. 41,” a piece that evokes images of Olympian grandeur and, for this reason, was later nicknamed “Jupiter.” The mood of the opening movement is proud and extroverted, yet in the second movement Mozart shifts to an atmosphere of restrained elegance.
The symphony will perform the overture to the opera, “The Magic Flute;” Divertimento No. 1, and Symphony No. 41, Mozart's final symphony, known as "Jupiter.” As lagniappe, the musicians will also perform Canzonas for Brass by 16th century composer Giovanni Gabrieli.
Next, the orchestra takes a break from Mozart to play Gabrieli’s “Canzonas for Brass.” The work marks the first time in the history of instrumental music that a composer made a deliberate effort to impress the listener and overwhelm him with power and splendor.

As is normal with Beecham’s Mozart performances, some of the tempi can be a little shocking, particularly for those people weaned on period performances.
Such was Mozart’s genius that we can enjoy this early concerto as much as the much later works, as a result of the care and sheer joy that is clearly evident in the combined playing.
