Symphony No. 1 (Havergal Brian) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Havergal Brian's Symphony No. 1 in D minor (The Gothic) was composed between 1919 and 1927, and partly owes its notoriety to being the largest symphony ever composed (described thus by the Guinness Book of Records).
The Havergal Brian Society have a number of essays and further detail on the symphony.
Attempts to perform the symphony have frequently met with failure, beginning with the efforts of Hamilton Harty and Eugene Goossens in the depression-affected 1930s and enduring to the current day, usually owing to the extreme logistics of the work.

The Sixth is compact but outstanding - possibly the next best Brian symphony but it is still consigned to vinyl perdition on a Lyrita LP (c/w No 16) LPO/Myer Fredman.
Brian had both ambition and preternatural ability and this Symphony is the evidence.
Brian’s Gothic is a massive asseveration of confidence by someone who stood as an outsider to the musical establishment unblessed with private resources or a public school education let alone a formal musical training.

Langdon Jones - Brian, Gothic Symphony
Despite the difficulties of obtaining a performance, one wonders why this symphony in particular, and Brian's music in general, is not far more popular.
Havergal Brian was a British composer, and when writing of his life or his works, you find yourself having to use superlatives.
The symphony has, so far as I know, only been performed a handful of times, and one of those occasions was in Sheffield Town Hall where, apparently, most of the room was taken up by performers, leaving very little space for the audience.

But no 8 also, which though a bit longer than these late works is the first of Brian's shorter symphonies, is also a very economical, tautly-argued piece - all the virtues of the earlier pieces combined with those of the later ones: as I said, my favourite Brian symphony by a short distance.
The first movement of Brian's Gothic Symphony opens in the key of d minor; thus it is proper to indicate that it is a d minor symphony.

BRIAN Symphony No 1 NAXOS 8.557418/9 [PSe]: Classical CD Reviews- July 2004 MusicWeb(UK)
Brian’s seems to have been a somewhat special case: he was one of those, neither directly involved in the fighting nor just supporting the war effort from the comparative safety of home.
Brian, who was not at all religious, suggested that the Te Deum actually forced itself upon him, ousting his originally-intended setting of the end of Goethe’s Faust.
In 1934, when Brian was already in his late fifties, Tovey admonished that establishment with the words, 'even for the recognition of his smaller works he is being made to wait.

 Havergal Brian
When I mention “Havergal Brian”, most people ask me, “Who?” – he is one of the unrecognised masters of 20th century music, notable for composing 32 symphonies, 5 operas, and a variety of other works in a very long lifetime.
His first symphony, also known as the »Gothic«, is (in)famous for being the largest symphony ever composed, and was slated for its Australian premiére at the Brisbane Festival in late 2004.
In his own lifetime Havergal Brian was the most prolific composer of symphonies since Joseph Haydn (he has since been surpassed by Alan Hovhaness), but most of the works are unfairly overshadowed by the notoriety of the Gothic.
