Topic: Symphony No 103 Haydn

Symphony No. 103 (Haydn) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 103 in E flat major is often called the "Drumroll Symphony", after the long roll on the timpani with which it begins.
Haydn later performed the work in Vienna, and for this purpose made a small cut in the final movement, which is usually respected by conductors today.
The symphony is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and the usual string section of first and second violins, violas, cellos, and double basses.

Of Haydn's concertos, the work written in 1796 for the newly developed and soon to be obsolete keyed trumpet, is the best known, closely rivalled by the two surviving Cello Concertos, in D and in C. Three genuine Violin Concertos remain, in G, in C and in A, and one Horn Concerto.
Haydn was a prolific composer of chamber music, with a considerable number of compositions for his principal patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, who played the baryton, a bowed string instrument resembling a viola da gamba, with sympathetic strings that could also be plucked.
Haydn composed nearly fifty keyboard sonatas, the earlier intended for harpsichord and the last for the newly developed hammer-action fortepiano.

Franz Joseph Haydn program notes (Feb'04/Mar'04) | Chamber Orchestra of the Springs
Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was born in the Austrian town of Rohrau, and in 1761, after a conspicuously ordinary early life, was engaged as vice-Kapellmeister by Prince Paul Esterházy, a Hungarian nobleman.
Haydn later remarked, "There was no one there to confuse me, so I was forced to become original." In 1790, Nikolaus died and the court musicians were dismissed by his successor.
Haydn's Symphony No. 103 in E-flat Major is nicknamed "Drum Roll" for its odd timpani roll introduction.

Eugen Jochum was a wonderful Haydn conductor and even in this age of historically informed performance orthodoxy, no apologies are necessary.
So in the minuet of Symphony No. 94 ("Surprise"), he hits accents hard--there's no question that it's a dance, even if the dancers are elephants--while the minuet of No. 103 is more delicately traced, conjuring pictures of a formal ballroom.
There's plenty of zing to Jochum's outer movements, and pieces like No. 93's finale whiz by with brio, while that symphony's Largo cantabile is done with a radiance bespeaking the conductor's love for the music.

No one was making official statements about the main auditorium's acoustics prior to the gala opening, but the sense is there's not a lot of worry about how the hall will sound.
The 2,265-seat auditorium, with its "vineyard" shape--meaning there is no proscenium and seats surround the orchestra in a gently terraced manner--has a cozy, intimate air.
The general consensus after the opening concert by the American Symphony Orchestra was that the hall exhibits a warm and very live sound.

In truth the start of the evening hadn't offered quite so much hope, a reading of Haydn's Drumroll symphony that seemed to fall uncomfortably between camps - neither large scale in the vein of a Bernstein or Karajan, nor small scale in a chamber orchestra sense.
The players clearly enjoyed themselves, and had plenty of fun with Haydn's unusual phrasing in the Andante until that rarest of Vienna Philharmonic occurrences - an out of tune solo violin.
