[Mozart - Symphony No. 35 in D "Haffner"] notes by Paul Serotsky
Mozart, aware that his serenade might be a “hit”, got in first with a wind band arrangement, and further capitalised with a hurried rejig (including enlarging the instrumentation) of four of the movements to form the Symphony No.
Writers often mention the unseemly haste with which this symphony was born, inciting the conclusion that it is consequently “sub-standard” Mozart.
Mozart was usually a bit silly where his finances were concerned, but suffered an unaccustomed excess of acumen in the train of this serenade.

Pro Arte: Mozart; Symphony No. 35 in D, Haffner
Actually the symphony was originally intended simply to be another serenade, for use at the celebration given Sigmund Haffner, a boyhood chum of Mozart's, when he was elevated to the nobility in recognition of his generous benefactions made to the city.
Mozart was also clearly recognized that the finale to the symphony made a perfect concert ending, even isolated from the rest of the work.
Mozart included the revised symphony on a concert that he gave on March 29, 1783.

 Chicago Symphony Orchestra - May 20, 21, 22, 25: Mozart/Berg/Janacek
The Prague Symphony is known in Germany as the symphony without a minuet, and, in fact, it’s the only one of Mozart’s last six symphonies that follows the serenity of the slow movement directly with the bustle of the finale.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s first subscription concert performances of Mozart’s Symphony no. 38 were given at the Auditorium Theatre on November 30 and December 1, 1894, with Theodore Thomas conducting.
Mozart originally composed this work as a serenade in July and August of 1782; he revised it the following year, adding flutes and oboes, and conducted the premiere of the work in its final form, as a four-movement symphony, on March 23, 1783, in Vienna.

Mozart removed both of these movements and added flutes and clarinets to the first and last movements (thus turning it into a symphony) for his "Wiener Akademien" performance attended by Emperor Joseph II in March 1783.
Mozart was now faced with the task of furthering his reputation as a composer and performer.
There is no mention of the Salzburg performance; however, upon receiving a copy of the score from his father six months later, in February 1783 he quickly wrote to him, "My new 'Haffner' symphony has positively amazed me, for I had forgotten every single note of it.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Symphony No.35, KV 385 "Haffner"
Surrounded by such a whirl of activity, Mozart could not have been entirely pleased when, in the summer of 1782, he received a letter from his father requesting a new symphony.
Not only was the Haffner Symphony incomplete, but also the letter broke to the father news of his son's impending marriage, a marriage to which Leopold strenuously objected.

But there’s also a different Mozart, the one who wrote G-minor symphonies No. 25 and 40, Piano Concerto No. 20, and the A-minor and C-minor piano sonatas: all tremendously expressive and turbulent works, full of dissonances, sudden key changes, and the general air of malevolent fate.

LSO - Wed 15 Dec 2004 7.30pm Barbican Hall, London. MOZART, BRUCKNER - London Symphony Orchestra
The 'Haffner' was the first symphony Mozart wrote after leaving Salzburg for Vienna in his mid-twenties and combines the freshness of youth with the sophistication he learned in the Austrian capital.
It was while working on his Seventh Symphony in 1883 that Bruckner learned of the death of Wagner and turned the slow movement into a moving elegy — but this is in any case a work with a special place among Bruckner's symphonies, revealing him at his most radiant and warmly lyrical.
