  Symphony X - The Odyssey
Symphony X are at their most mentally stimulating to listen to when their use of timing is at its most interesting or technical.
The timing alterations that Symphony X used on the verses of Accolade II are actually annoying when you have heard the original song, as the chorus seemed to sound the best on the original version of the song with their original timing.
Symphony X are an intelligent band, (at least they used to - and hopefully will continue to - write fairly intelligent worlds and music), and although it doesn’t indicate intelligence immediately, it is nice to see that some of the band members read.

 Symphony X
Symphony X hail from New Jersey, USA and were founded there in April 1994.
Although the album immediately made a big impression on fans of the progressive metal scene all over the world and achieved excellent reviews in Japan, the band still considers it a "demo" and thus, went back into the studio to refine their songwriting abilities and production ideas.
Symphony X - "V" was released in Japan in July and immediately reached number 46 on the national charts.

Metal Coven Webzine - Metal Reviews - Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
Diatribe aside, this album (named "V," I assume, because this is the fifth studio release by the band, and after the importance of the number five throughout the lyrics of the album), is simply one of the best albums I have ever been fortunate enough to own and listen to.
"V" is a concept album, a fictional opus that chronicles the rise and fall of the Atlantean Empire, and the subsequent rise of the ancient Egyptian Empire from the ashes.
The only band that can top Symphony X in terms of impossible musical skill is Dream Theater, but while they might be able to pull off more impressive technical feats and tandem solos, Symphony X is much more consistent in their technicality.

For the better part of the past decade, New Jersey’s Symphony X have been wowing international audiences with their modern take on neo-classical metal.
On their sixth album (and first for the US division of the venerable Eurometal label Inside Out), the band continue to wed Dream Theater’s harmonic and conceptual rigor to Pantera’s primal stomp.
The subject matter is appropriately ambitious: the album takes its name from Homer’s epic, and "The Odyssey" closes the disc with 24 minutes of hair-raising riffs on the high seas with Odysseus.

At the end of '96 Symphony X started to work on "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy", to this date to be considered a classic in its genre.

On initially hearing this album I thought that Romeo's guitar playing, and his solos in particular, were generally better than in V, though V is a more focussed album and is themed, whereas DWOT is one of Symphony X's albums where the imagination floodgates were thrown open, with a new concept for each song.
Symphony X themselves are actually some of the main proponents of this album being their first 'true' album, as they opined this in more than one interview.
Even back in their debut album, Symphony X showed precocious promise with the excellent epic 'A Lesson Before Dying', but TDWOT is from a more developed band now that it is their third album, and the quality of the epic song is outstanding.

Symphony X is the first album by the band of the same name.
Many Progressive Metal and Symphony X fans consider this to be their least appreciated album, due to relatively poor production and the lack of Russell Allen, whom with Michael Romeo would define the "Symphony X" sound.
A reissue of the album was released in 2004, however, all the original tracks remained untouched.

With their sixth album ‘The Odyssey’, Symphony X have gone for an overall heavier sound, with guitarist Michael Romeo providing some edgier riffs, and vocalist Russell Allen keen to compete with a Dio like range and emphasis on phrasing.
Symphony X's music is complex, challenging, but still retains the simple creed of riffs and choruses will never go out of fashion.

Even though it is approaching ten years since the release of Symphony X's self-titled debut CD, only in the last few years has the majority of the metal underground come to be familiar with this progressive metal quintet.
It has been two years since then, and Symphony X are once more showing the world that they are a musical force to be reckoned with.
One song that doesn't live up to the standards of the rest of the album is "The Accolade II," a sequel to "The Accolade" from the album "The Divine Wings of Tragedy." This song is the lightest to be found on "The Odyssey," and probably the least technical as well.

So we did the 3rd album, and the same kind of thing happened with the tour after that: we had problems with the drummer, we substituted drummers, and by the time we find a new drummer it was already July.

V also makes me think that this album is just the latest stop in the musical journey that is Symphony X - and that if you haven't heard their previous albums, it's like coming into a movie halfway through.
Maybe some of the band's fans who have the earlier albums can back me up on this, but I'd tend to think that V is a disc which can only be fully appreciated by someone who is familiar with all of Symphony X's work.

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by Symphony X keyboard player Michael Pinnella called Enter By The Twelfth Gate
It has been more than two years since the release of the last Symphony X album (The Odyssey / 2002), and it seems that the members of the band are finding it quite difficult to tame their creative cravings.
Before you start making scenarios of departure from Symphony X (which normally happens when a musician decides to go solo), I urge you to listen to "Enter By The Twelfth Gate" first — believe me that all the answers that you need are right there.
It is true that I am a big fan of Symphony X and that I really admire their work on "The Odyssey", but I normally expect more things from the solo efforts of these very talented artists.

Symphony X is certainly an anomaly: an '80s-style fantasy metal band who came along in 1994 (after Nirvana and Pearl Jam's success had seriously rearranged the rock landscape) and ended up acquiring a loyal Gen-X following (especially in Europe).
From the conceptual lyrics to the Euro-classical influence to the elaborate arrangements and melodies, The Odyssey is a 2002 release that wouldn't have been out of place in 1985.
That isn't to say that The Odyssey is in a class with Operation: Mindcrime; however, it is a respectable effort that will likely please those who have enjoyed Symphony X's previous releases.
