Symposia are an important part of the ICES work programme, not least because they foster the broadening of the diversity of scientists who participate in ICES activities.
Proceedings of ICES Symposia are, in principle, to be submitted to the ICES Journal of Marine Science for consideration before any alternative publication arrangements are made.
ICES Marine Science Symposia (MSS), the Council’s proceedings series for many years, was incorporated in the Journal in 1995, but under special circumstances occasional volumes of proceedings may be published exclusively in MSS.

Because Symposia relies on just a few of the network library API calls, it is very easy to use another network library by implementing the 7 function calls on top of the new one.
Symposia needs to evolve towards this kind of approach where the actions, currently defined in C, could be interpreted instead of compiled.
