Topic: Synaphobranchidae

  Inter Research » MEPS » v235 » p279-288
Catch rates and the species richness of leptocephali were higher in the Kuroshio region than in the western Pacific Ocean.
The most abundant leptocephali in the region were of the eel families Congridae, Synaphobranchidae, Ophichthidae and Muraenidae.
Several taxa of congrid eels, including Gnathophis nystromi nystromi and Ariosoma spp., were spawning along the edge of the Kuroshio Current, as were muraenids, ophichthids, nettastomatids and Dysomma anguillare (Synaphobranchidae).

The deep-sea eel, Synaphobranchus kaupi (Pisces: Synaphobranchidae), is a dominant species on the continental slopes of the North Atlantic.
The use of a semi-balloon trawl (OTSB) fished on a single warp has revealed that it is the most abundant species on the slopes of the Rockall Trough.
This paper describes some aspects of the biology, especially feeding, of this important species.
