The Recomposition of the Greek Far Left
Not by chance the leadership of Synaspismos was the architect and the most vigorous supporter of the left-right coalition government (government Tzannetakis) in 1989 and against the old “socialist” PASOK leadership.
In the beginning of the nineties the Synaspismos leadership participated at least in the first phase of the nationalist mobilizations for the exclusively “Greek” Macedonia.
Synaspismos seems to need such a type of collaboration in order to compete successfully against the CPG with its more left image.

During the dictatorship of 1967-1974, Alavanos took part in the struggle against the Regime of the Colonels and was imprisoned for his political convictions.
He was constantly elected European MP from 1981 to 2004, first with the Communist Party of Greece and then with Synaspismos.
Since Nikos Konstantopoulos, his predecessor in Synaspismos' leadership announced his intention not to be candidate for a next term of presidency, Alavanos announced his own will to succeed him in his office.

When democracy was restored in 1974 the KKE was overshadowed by the new socialist party PASOK, and has since been a minor party of the left.
In 1989 it formed Coalition of the Left and Progress (Greek: Synaspismos tis Aristeras kai tis Proodou, Συνασπισμος της Αριστερας και της Προοδου).
The Communist Party claims that the current Synaspismos are falsely using that name, Synaspismos claim that they continued the coalition after the withdrawal of KKE.

In the 1993 Hellenic Parliament election, the failure of Synaspismos to pass the 3% threshold in order to enter the parliament was a near disaster for the party.
Maria Damanaki, who was then the president of Synaspismos resigned from her position, and Konstantopoulos took over as the party leader.
In the 2004 Hellenic Parliament election, Synaspismos narrowly escaped from being excluded from the parliament again, acquiring a disappointing 3,2% at a national level, despite it had formed an alliance with other minor parties of the Greek left.

Greece - Problems of far left recomposition
Unfortunately, the Synaspismos leadership was the architect and the most vigorous supporter of the right-left coalition government in 1989 (led by Tzannetakis) in opposition to the old "socialist" leadership of PASOK.
Differences appeared inside Synaspismos, paralyzing it at least initially: one of its currents wished to join the "anti-terrorist" camp, in order to be modern, while the other wished to centre the intervention of the party against the war on formulations referring to "international law" and "international institutions".
It seems that the majority of Synaspismos is gradually taking its distance from the most right wing and pro-imperialist tendencies inside it, but it missed the first big demonstrations and it initially manipulated the rubric of "Space", leading to a flood of protests from the other components.
