In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Synaxis
In Christian and liturgical use the Synaxis is the assembly for any religious function, either in the abstract sense (nomen actionis) or concretely for the people assembled (cf.
Thus 4 January is the "Synaxis of the Holy Seventy", that is the feast of the seventy disciples (Luke, x, 1, where the Vulgate has seventy-two, on which day the assembly was once made in some church (at Constantinople?) dedicated to them (Nilles, "Kalendarium manuale," I, 2nd ed., Innsbruck, 1896, p.
52); 26 December is the "Synaxis of the Theotokos and of Joseph the spouse and guardian of the Virgin", a feast in memory of the flight into Egypt, on which again the station was at a special church (ibid., 366).

 HyeEtch - Religion & Church - Holy Liturgy p2
Thus, the Synaxis and the Eucharistic rite (or the Badarak) originally were two distinct rites, either of which could be celebrated without the other.
The Enarxis is the beginning of the Synaxis during which the congregation, both the faithful and the seekers, constitutes one body in the name of Jesus Christ.
Later, when the Synaxis was joined to the Holy Sacrifice to serve as an instructive service for the sake of catechumens, unbelievers and faithful alike, the dismissal of the non-believers became essential before the beginning of the Holy Sacrifice.

 A Sacred Congregation
In the fifth century A.D., the coastal shrine to Maron, whose configuration remains unknown, was replaced with a splendid three-aisled basilica, measuring 178 by 66 feet and including a forecourt, with galleries on an upper story.
The church at Synaxis belongs to a type usually found in northwestern Greece and Albania: a cruciform basilica with a transverse aisle terminating in a shallow apse at each end.
Many architectural blocks of the fifth-century basilica at Synaxis were sturdy enough to withstand damage, possibly caused by an earthquake, at the end of the sixth century and were used in the reconstruction of the sanctuary.

The reason of this is that St. Benedict introduced in the cursus, another hour--that of Compline--which was prescribed to be celebrated in the evening, and which might be considered as a kind of doubling of the Office of Lucernarium.

 A Cistercian Synaxis
It was felt to be a quite appropriate name for the meeting of Cistercian women and men that took place at the Abbey of Cîteaux from March 17 to 19, 1998, just before the celebration of the 9th centenary of the foundation of that abbey, on March 21st.
The "Cistercian Synaxis" was a gathering of monks and nuns belonging to all the branches of the Cistercian family.
But it had become gradually evident, even before the Synaxis, that to try to give a final form to such a document at the Synaxis itself would be too ambitious a plan.

The expression "officium divinum" is used in the same sense by the Council of Aix-la-Chapelle (800), the IV Lateran (1215), and Vienne (1311); but it is also used to signify any office of the Church.
But the Eucharistic synaxis soon entailed other prayers; the custom of going to the Temple disappeared; and the abuses of the Judaizing party forced the Christians to separate more distinctly from the Jews and their practices and worship.
Probably this part of the Mass was the first form of the Divine Office, and, in the beginning, the vigils and the Eucharistic Synaxis were one.

Synaxis of the Mother of God   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A synaxis, (Greek: assembly, synod), in the Byzantine rite, is a feast on which we honor those saints who are connected with the saints or mystery celebrated on the previous day.
In addition, the feast reminds us of the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt to save the Divine Infant from the massacre of innocent children ordered by King Herod after the departure of the Magi, as described in the Gospel read in the Divine Liturgy (Mt 2:13-23).
According to tradition of the Easter Church on Synaxis, that is on the day after certain feast days, the clergy of a given region gathered in a larger city and together with the bishop concelebrated the Holy Liturgy, after which they usually had a regional convention.
