  Super-8 & 16mm Filmmaking Sync Sound FAQ
In the early days of double-system sound recording, both the motion picture camera and the magnetic film recorder (see "What is a magnetic film recorder") were driven by "synchronous" AC motors.
Thus, early picture and sound synchronization was achieved by the ability of the synchronous motor to maintain an accurate speed.
This Converter is connected between the camera and the tape recorder to affect the sync sound process during shooting.

 Sync Sound in Indian Cinema
Sync Sound or Synchronous Sound, as the name suggests, is a highly precise and skilled recording technique in which the artist's original dialogues are used and eliminates the tedious process of 'dubbing' over these dialogues at the Post-Production Stage.
Sync Sound requires a lot more discipline and the producer lucky to get the actor's dates for the shoot would prefer taking the easier method to get as much shooting as he can while the star is available.
Sync Sound texture is very realistic and cannot be reproduced in a Dubbing Studio and the actor's performances can never be repeated while dubbing either.

 Hemi-Sync, Sound and Resonance
Resonance is also the principle involved in the amplification and elongation of the sound/vibrations experienced when a guitar string is plucked and the wood of the hollow vibrates in tune with that string.
Robert Monroe, as musician, sound engineer, researcher, and originator of the Hemi-Sync® binaural beat technology, clearly understood the concepts of resonance and entrainment.

A half-solution is to set the camera far away from the dialogue if it is fitted with a telephoto lens, but you are limited to the best focal length of the lens.
Another option is the Arriflex 16BL or 35BL, the BL stands for "blimped." A blimp is a sound absorbing shell fitted over the camera, it's sometimes called a "Barney." The Arriflex BL models also have sound insulated lenses and much quieter mechanisms.

Sound track rolls are designated according to the type of sound each contains, i.e., narration, sync sound, sound effects, music, or presence.
It is a very good practice when the original sound is being recorded, in the studio or on various locations, to record a few minutes of room tone.
It is preferable that all workprints for sound mixing be submitted with a Universal leader as described under "Work Print Leaders." This aids the laboratory in preparing the film for printing, and in assuring that the track will be in sync.

 Super 8mm Sound Recording/Synchronizing Methods
Anyhow, when you get ready to transfer the sound to the film, you line up the starting frame in the projector gate, the frame where the slate is closed thus where it made the sound.
When done editing, you now transfer the sound from your edited film back to the tape recorder, then you line the film up in the beginning and then re-record (transfer) the sound back onto the film, but this time correctly with the picture trailing behind by the normal 18 frames separation.
On the sound film you have to remove the slate parts now (except the very first one which is used to line up the film and sound again later for transfer), and also remove the slat parts on the picture film.

Each sync option has a different impact on a sound's playback behavior, so we should choose the right one depending upon the goals of the presentation.
Event sync and start sync sounds are the most common sync option for interactive sound because once loaded, they respond immediately to user interaction.
Stream sync sounds are not often used for interactive sound because they do not respond immediately to user interaction due to buffering.

 WILD SYNCH
The traditional method involves recording the sound either to a crystal or cable controlled tape recorder, and to transfer that tape recorder’s sound to Super-8 fullcoat, which is magnetic tape in the same shape (including sprocket holes) as Super-8 film.
There are no cables or sync pulses, because the sound is synched up later in the editing process, using Super-8 film as a home-made fullcoat in a Super-8 sound projector.
Finally, the in-sync dialogue film can be further edited "single-system" to add additional shots, or alternatively, additional shots can be added as long as an equal number of frames are removed, so as to maintain the same number of frames on the film and the fullcoat.

Background sound such as honking horns or shouting people or even the noises of the film crew itself can obscure dialogue or otherwise produce an effect that the director does not want in the sound of the film.
We don't usually notice the sound of the breeze or a motor hum, but their absence in a Hollywood product would be quite conspicuous.

Hemi-Sync sound patterns, although recorded at a sub audible level, are not verbal messages and are not recorded at high speed.
The purpose of Hemi-Sync sound patterns is to assist you in obtaining the focused brain state you desire.

Right and left auditory input is combined in the brainstem's superior olivary nucleus and routed to the reticular formation that, in turn, uses neurotransmitters to initiate changes in neurological activity in the thalamus and cortex.
The sensation of auditory binaural beats occurs when two coherent sounds of nearly similar frequencies are presented one to each ear with stereo headphones or speakers.
The primary beat stimulus becomes monaural beating, the sounds from the two speakers being mixed together in the open air before being perceived by the listener.

The general rule for multi-channel mixing is to have the dialogue and the main sound effects in the center and front speakers; ambiances and secondary sound effects in the surround speakers; and the music in all of the speakers, being the loudest in the front.
There are two methods of doing this, either speed up the digital sound playback.1% to film speed and transfer the sound mix to a mag machine running at film speed; or slow down a mag machine.1% to video speed and transfer the sound mix at video speed.

Sounds set to stop sync are not really sounds but a kind of non-actionscript command that stops playback of the specified sound.
A specified sound is the name of a library sound rather than an instance of a library sound.
Therefore using the stop sync command is much like telling flash to stop all instances of a movie clip symbol rather than a specific movie clip instance.

If the sound from the Nagra is fine but the Mackie output is not, check to see that the mixer input slice and master output are set to the usual detent position of 12:00 and that the loud parts of your dialog are not causing the "+22" clipping indicator on the Mackie's meter to light.
Sure it helps if your sound is technically polished -- meaning that the recordings aren't unintentionally distorted or noisy, that the dialog sounds clear and natural, etc. But to really have an effective soundtrack, it's important that the sound conveys information that the audience cares about.
And if sound effects are merely used to cover the basics of "seeing a car, hearing a car" then a filmmaker really isn't working with the full potential of the medium.
