A hybrid of swimming, gymnastics, and ballet, synchronized swimming involves competitors (either individuals, duets, trios or teams) combining strength, endurance, flexibility, grace and artistry with exceptional breath control while upside down underwater.
Synchronized swimming is an Olympic sport open to women since 1984.
While there is evidence of swimmers performing ballet-like maneuvers in the water in ancient times, the origin of synchronized swimming as an organized, competitive sport dates to the early 20th century.

 New Zealand Synchronised Swimming history
It is known that a Synchronised Swimming group was active in Dunedin in 1933 and 1934.
At the 85th Annual General Meeting of the NZASA in 1975 a policy was embarked on to extend the awareness of and participation in Synchronised Swimming in New Zealand.
In early 1976 Deborah Lye and Sally-Anne Jenkins from Auckland competed in the Australian Synchronised Swimming Championships, and in September of 1976 Sally-Anne and Anne Breekveldt from Auckland were selected by the NZASA, and became the second International representatives when they competed in Solo and Duet at the Pan Pacific Championships in Nagoya, Japan.

It was when the first sub-committee for synchronised swimming was set up by the Australian Swimming Union (now Australian Swimming Inc.) that synchro made its mark in Australia.
Australia improved on their previous 7th placing at the World Swimming Championships in 1979 which were held in Columbia when they were represented by Donella Burridge and Lisa Steans in the solo and duet events.
Up until a couple of years after the World Swimming Championships each state had their own award system for swimmers, but in 1981 all the states came together and adopted the Star System which is still in place.
