What an evil machine that is, I havn't heard any music that was done on a Synclavier that was any good, by anybody,it was just a rich pop-stars play thing at the end of the day.
The Synclavier sounds so clinicle, especially all that awfull synthetic orchestral stuff he did on it, iit sounds like a fruit machine.
A good use of his synclavier is the intro to Rocket Love which is a hella dark song.

The mature Synclavier was a modular, component-based system that included facilities for FM-based synthesis, digital sampling, hard-disk recording, and sophisticated computer-based sound editing.
By the late 1980s, complete Synclavier systems were selling for upwards of $100,000, to famous musicians such as Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder (who played his on an episode of The Cosby Show), and to major studios the world over.
The Synclavier was also employed by experimental musicians, such as Laurie Anderson, who used it extensively in her music.

I've only tried the early Roland model they had with the Synclavier, and it just wasn't right for me. If it were, I'd have the thing up and running right now.
The main advantage for me with the Synclavier is that I can imagine rhythms that human beings have difficulty contemplating, let alone executing.

 Vintage Synth Explorer - NED Synclavier
Although there have been three models, (the second called the Synclavier II pictured above) they are most often referred to as just a Synclavier.
The first version appeared in 1979 but was soon replaced by the Synclavier II with a new 'partial timbre' sound editing feature (it tweaks the harmonics), built-in FM synthesis and an external Hard Disk storage option.
From its specs alone it can be seen that the Synclavier is a masterpiece digital sampler / synthesizer workstation which was the first of its kind and way ahead of its time.

The thing about the Synclavier is that you can do all midi/dsp and D to D functions within the one project.
What has been related to me is that Zappa used the Synclavier for lots of reasons, one of which was that he could input music into it that human beings simply cannot play.

 1978 New England Digital Synclavier
But the story of the Synclavier began years before when a group of engineering students (Sydney Alonzo, Cameron Jones and Judd Burnham) in the Digital Hardware Lab at Dartmouth College created a small digital synthesizer to give computer-aided instruction in music with some composition language software and ear-training exercises.
Based on the response to their simple prototype, the group applied for a grant to create a larger, multi-user system, and was able to license FM synthesis from Yamaha.
The early units were fairly crude, but with the later debut of the Synclavier II, which offered polyphonic sampling and powerful synthesis capability (still favored by many top sound designers worldwide), NED was on the way.
