  Syncline Summary
A syncline is a fold in which the youngest rocks occur in the core of a fold (i.e., closest to the fold axis), whereas the oldest rocks occur in the core of an anticline.
In structural geology, a syncline is a downward-curving fold, with layers that dip toward the center of the structure.
On a geologic map (or "in map view"), synclines are recognized by a sequence of rock layers that grow progressively younger, followed by the youngest layer at the fold's center or hinge, and by a reverse sequence of the same rock layers on the opposite side of the hinge.

Anticline and Syncline - ninemsn Encarta
Anticline and Syncline, in geology, terms used to describe folded rock layers where the relative ages of the layers are known (see Folds and Folding).
Specifically, anticlines are folds in which the oldest rocks are in the core, or centre of the fold, while synclines have the youngest rocks in their cores.
If permeable rock is folded into a syncline and impermeable rock lies at the bottom of the syncline, then water will accumulate at the bottom of the syncline.

 Oilfield Glossary: Term 'syncline'
The youngest rock layers form the core of the fold and outward from the core progressively older rocks occur.
Synclines typically do not trap hydrocarbons because fluids tend to leak up the limbs of the fold.
An anticline is the opposite type of fold, having upwardly-convex layers with old rocks in the core.

Paleozoic rocks in the syncline are stratigraphically correlative to the classic cratonal sequence of the Grand Canyon and individual units are assigned names from the Grand Canyon.
