  OSH Answers: Synergism
It refers to the interaction between two or more "things" when the combined effect is greater than if you added the "things" on their own (a type of "when is one plus one is greater than two" effect).
In toxicology, synergism refers to the effect caused when exposure to two or more chemicals at as time results in health effects that are greater than the sum of the effects of the individual chemicals.
While the mechanisms of synergism can change from situation to situation, most of the time there appears to be an effect on the enzymes that regulate or influence the way our bodies work.

 Divine/Human Synergism in Ministry
I have chosen to focus the issue of synergism in the ministry particularly in relation to the work and mission of the Church.
They are intended to be reflective, the touchstone for continuing dialogue as this community of faith attempts to come to grips with who it is, where it is going, and what it intends to strive for in fulfillment of its reason for existing.
Synergism, then, will be viewed as the outworking of God's grace in the life of human beings in such a way that they have the capability (Wesley's "can") and responsibility (Wesley's "must") of response to God.

Dictionary definition of synergism is the way Reformation Theology uses it (as it related to regeneration), not sanctification as the verse in Philipians uses it.
The Augustinian synergism described in #12 is emphatic that the free will is moved by grace (and cannot will anything good without that grace, and hence cannot merit anything “on its own”) but yet is moved by all-powerful God in such a way that it still wills freely.
To that extent, I suppose I disagree with Perry and agree with SV2.

Monergism vs. Synergism by John Hendryx
Monergism and synergism are terms that may or may not be familiar to you but are of immense importance to evangelicals if we hope to maintain fidelity to the Scriptures as we enter the new millennium.
Synergism is the doctrine that the act of being born again is achieved through a combination of human will and divine grace.
Synergism appears to be a system of theology that is forced awkwardly on the Scriptures - trying to read into the Word a hermeneutic governed by a theological predisposition that is most likely the result of man's unending desire to contribute something to his own salvation.

 Synergism - Theopedia
Synergism, in general, may be defined as two or more agents working together to produce a result not obtainable by any of the agents independently.
Regarding the doctrine of salvation, this is essentially the view that God and man work together, each contributing their part to accomplish salvation in and for the individual.
Synergism is "...the doctrine that there are two efficient agents in regeneration, namely the human will and the divine Spirit, which, in the strict sense of the term, cooperate.

While synergism believes grace plays a role in salvation yet he does not believe salvation is by grace alone - instead it is grace plus our response which makes us to be born again.
Hence, Hendryx confuses synergism (that man and God are both causal factors) with Pelagian monergism (that it is all man, and God just helps after the fact).
Hendryx does make one true point, albeit a moot one: "While synergism believes grace plays a role in salvation yet he does not believe salvation is by grace alone - instead it is grace plus our response which makes us to be born again" (emph.

In each of these potyvirus-associated synergisms, the level of the nonpotyvirus in the synergistic pair (MCMV, BPMV and PVX) increases 5-10 fold in co-infected plants, while the level of the potyvirus is unchanged from that seen in singly infected plants.
However, a role for these other potyviral sequences in synergism cannot yet be excluded since their level of expression in the transgenic plants is much lower than that seen in infected plants.
Thus, this potyviral sequence is behaving as a viral "synergism sequence", inducing PVX/potyviral synergistic disease in a plant infected singly with PVX.

When two or more drugs are given concurrently that produce the same biological effect, the resulting effect generally follows one of three patterns--additive effect, synergism, or potentiation.
Synergism is said to occur when the combined effects of two agonists exceed that predicted by the individual actions of these compounds (i.e., the resulting effect is more than additive).
Isoboles are constructed for drug concentrations producing some constant effect, usually the ED If the effects of the two drugs are additive, the slope of the resulting plot is -1.

Synergy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Synergy or synergism (from the Greek synergos meaning working together, circa 1660) refers to the phenomenon in which two or more discrete influences or agents acting together create an effect greater than that predicted by knowing only the separate effects of the individual agents.
Synergism stems from the 1657 theological doctrine that human will cooperates with divine grace in regeneration.
The term began to be used in the broader, non-theological, sense by 1925.

 The Synergism Hypothesis
In The Synergism Hypothesis (Corning 1983), it was proposed that synergistic phenomena of various kinds have played a key causal role in the evolution of cooperation generally and the evolution of complex systems in particular; it was argued that a common functional principle has been associated with the various steps in this important directional trend.
The significance of symbiogenesis in relation to the synergism hypothesis is that these "creative" processes have constituted an important subset of the total universe of synergistic phenomena that have played a causal role in the evolution of complexity.
Accordingly, the synergism hypothesis can be tested in much the same way that the role of natural selection is routinely tested, with hypotheses and analytical tools that are appropriate to a given context.

In this way we have determined that the potyviral helper component protease gene (HC-Pro) is sufficient to induce synergism, and that expression of the protein is required.
Furthermore, the amino-terminal "zinc-finger-like" domain of HC-Pro is dispensable for synergism, but a central domain of the protein that overlaps regions known to function in long distance transport and replication of the potyvirus, are also required for synergism.
This result suggests that HC-Pro may act as a kind of general potyviral "synergism" gene, and that the potyviral-associated synergisms may all operate via a common pathway.
