 [No title]
Syngamy literally means “married together” and is the moment when the genetic material from the egg and the sperm join to become one.
It occurs in the fertilized egg about 20 hours after the sperm has entered.
A few hours before syngamy the sperm’s chromosomes and the egg’s chromosomes are visible as separate ‘spheres’ (or vacuoles) called pronuclei.

  Protozoa - LoveToKnow 1911
It is true that in many types of Protozoa syngamy is not known as yet to occur, but in all species which have been thoroughly investigated syngamy in some form has been observed, and there is nothing to lead to the belief that the sexual process is not of universal occurrence in the Protozoa.
Hence the macrogamete is the passive element in syngamy, which requires to be sought out and" fertilized "by the active microgamete, a division of labour perfectly analogous to that seen in the male and female gametes of Metazoa.
In those cases where syngamy takes place by interchange of nuclear substance between two gametes which remain separate from one another, as in the Infusoria, each gamete forms two pronuclei, which are distinguished by their behaviour as the active and passive pronuclei respectively.

Fertilisation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fertilisation, also spelled fertilization (also known as conception, fecundation and syngamy), is fusion of gametes to form a new organism of the same species.
In animals, the process involves a sperm fusing with an ovum, which eventually leads to the development of an embryo.
With multi-seeded fruits, multiple grains of pollen are necessary for syngamy with each ovule.

In recent years the term "syngamy" (from the Greek words together and marriage) has been altered in meaning from the union of gametes to the (later) union of the pro-nuclei.
To prevent the continuing development of the cell (zygote) formed by joining of egg and sperm (syngamy) and to terminate the ensuing development is to terminate this human life.
Immediately upon the fusion of the sperm membranes with the cell membrane of the ovum, the cytoplasm of the ovum enfolds and gathers in the sperm head and tail, and releases granules which are in the outer part of the cell.

After syngamy, the zygote developes into a young, and then an old 2n multinucleate plasmodia.

Thus, the life cycles alternate between 1n and 2n stages, and between the processes of meiosis and syngamy.
It is because of the way in which genes recombine in meiosis and syngamy that we have the whole study of genetics.

The human sperm centrosome is responsible for normal syngamy and early embryonic development -- Palermo et al. 2 (1): ...
As early as 1887, it was postulated that the mature oocyte possesses all of the elements necessary for embryonic development with the exception of an active division centre, and that the spermatozoon contains such a centre, but lacks the substrate in which to operate.
At gamete fusion the sperm tail is incorporated into the ooplasm, and the centriolar region forms the sperm aster while the sperm head is decondensing; this aster acts to guide the female pronucleus towards the male pronucleus.
The centriole duplicates during the pronuclear stage, and at syngamy centrioles are found at opposite poles of the first cleavage.
