The Canons of Dordt are a statement of faith produced by the Synod of Dordt held in 1618-19 in the Netherlands.
This synod condemned the theology of the followers of Arminius and put forward an interpretation of the doctrine of predestination which affirmed the complete dependence of people on God's irresistible grace for salvation.
The documents which derive from this synod are known as the Canons of Dordt.

The Synod of Dort was a National Synod held in Dordrecht in 1618/19, by the Dutch Reformed Church, in order to settle a serious controversy in the Dutch churches initiated by the rise of Arminianism.
The acts of the Synod were tied to political intrigues that arose during the twelve year truce in the Dutch war with Spain.
The decision of the Synod was the doom of the very highly respected and influential statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had been the protector of the Arminian Remonstrants.

For the Synod of Dordt (1618, 1619) defended the gospel of salvation by (sovereign) grace alone in an hour when the gospel was under attack by the subtlest form of the lie that had ever assailed it.
Dordt's defense of the gospel-the one, true gospel-necessarily took the form of confessing that grace is particular and effectual, or irresistible.
This latter conference was held in 1603 by the Curator of the university and the deputies of the synod.

"The Sabbath Question" - Part V - by James MacGregor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
And while all Protestant Churches were thus made awake and alive to the question of the Decalogue in general, the “Reformed” branches of the Reformation Church were free from the blinding influence of the festival-system with reference to the fourth commandment in particular.
The Synod of Dordt had as its nucleus the divines of Holland, who — though no one of them equaled Francis Turretin — had by this time as a class borne away the palm from Geneva, and become the theological leaders of the Calvinistic branch of the Reformation Church.
Here, I believe, the Synod was mistaken in point of fact: it is doubtful whether the Jewish Sabbath was really more rigid than the Christian; and it is certain that the fourth commandment does not prescribe any rigidity distinctively Jewish.

But as many as truly believe, and are delivered and saved from sin and destruction through the death of Christ, are indebted for this benefit solely to the grace of God given them in Christ from everlasting, and not to any merit of their own.
This doctrine the Synod judges to be drawn from the Word of God, and to be agreeable to the confession of the Reformed Churches.
Moreover, the Synod warns calumniators themselves to consider the terrible judgment of God which awaits them, for bearing false witness against the confessions of so many Churches; for distressing the consciences of the weak; and for laboring to render suspected the society of the truly faithful.

Canons of Dordt (or Synod of Dort)
The Synod of Dort was an international church assembly called by the States General of the Netherlands to settle certain ecclesiastical and doctrinal matters that had been troubling the Reformed Church of the Netherlands.
Although these men lived well before the meeting of the synod, their rejection of the doctrine of human depravity and adulation of free will was accepted by the Arminian party, named after James Arminius, a professor of theology at the University of Leiden.
When the Synod of Dort met in 1618, the Remonstrants expected that they would be recognized as equals and that the synod would be a conference to discuss disputed questions.

The Decision of the Synod of Dordt on the Five Main Points of Doctrine in Dispute in the Netherlands is popularly known as the Canons of Dordt (or the Five Articles Against the Remonstrants).
Although this was a national Synod of the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands, it had an international character, since it was composed not only of sixty-two Dutch delegates, but also of twenty-seven foreign delegates representing eight countries.
The Synod then developed the Canons which thoroughly rejected the Remonstrance of 1610 and scripturally set forth the Reformed doctrine on these debated points, now popularly called "the five points of Calvinism": unconditional election, limited atonement, total depravity, irresistible grace, and the perseverance of saints.

Intro to Five Points of Calvinism Part 3
At the Synod of Dordt, some followers of Jacob Arminius brought forth the “Five Points of Remonstrance.” As the protestant movement grew and began to mature in its early years these “Arminians” began to take issue with some of the things they found in the writings of protestant leaders like Calvin.
Thus, the five points of the remonstrance came to be known as the five points of Arminianism and the five points of response from the Synod became known as the five points of Calvinism.
The questions at Dordt were not exhaustive and neither are the answers.

Who teach: That the will of God to save those who would believe and would persevere in faith and in the obedience of faith, is the whole and entire decree of election unto salvation, and that nothing else concerning this decree has been revealed in God's Word.
For grace is conferred by means of admonitions; and the more readily we perform our duty, the more eminent usually is this blessing of God working in us, and the more directly is his work advanced; to whom alone all the glory both of means, and of their saving fruit and efficacy is forever due.
And this is the perspicuous, simple, and ingenious declaration of the orthodox doctrine respecting the five articles which have been controverted in the Belgic churches; and the rejection of the errors, with which they have for some time been troubled.
