  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Synoptics
Synoptics, in their sources, minor differences in the events recorded continually appear, which can be fully realized only through a diligent study of the parallel passages, or through the perusal of larger commentaries in which such constant differences are distinctly pointed out.
Synoptics record, and of this the Evangelists themselves were fully aware (Matthew 11:21; 23:37; Luke 10:13; John 21:25; etc.); whence then does it come that the framework of the Synoptic narrative is practically the same in all the
Its general principle of solution of the Synoptic Problem is that in the composition of their writings, the first three Evangelists have all made use of earlier written material.

We now leave the world of the Synoptics, in which we have come to feel at home, to turn to a work that is nothing like them, the Gospel of John.
Whereas in the Synoptics his words are contained in short snippets linked together by editors to form a sequence of sayings, in John we find extended discourses running into multiple paragraphs.
In studying the Synoptics we noticed that the evangelists assumed a license to infuse their story with their own "take" on Jesus, even shaping his words to address concerns of their day.

The synoptics are written from a third person point of view, describing the events as if the authors had personally observed all of them and were reporting what they saw at the time.

In the discussion of the relationship between John and the other synoptic gospels, it is almost impossible to be dogmatic when talking about which theory best explains the similarities and differences.
It is the second view however to which we turn, because to show that the John wrote independent of the Synoptics is to free the gospel and allow a greater interpretation of the facts.

Rejection of Pascal's Wager:The Gospel of John   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Like the case with the synoptics, the traditional attribution of this gospel to John, the son of Zebedee is wrong.
In the synoptics we find that Jesus kept his messiahship a secret at the beginning only to reveal it after Peter's confession at Caesarea Philippi (Mark 8:27-30; Matthew 16: 13-20; Luke 9:18-21) but in John his special status is made known almost from the beginning.
For there are many parallel scenes in the synoptics in which the beloved disciple is not mentioned when we would have expected him to, given the importance of his role depicted in the fourth gospel.

Fatigue in the Synoptics, Mark Goodacre
There are two ways of explaining the double tradition: either Luke and Matthew are both dependent on a common source, Q - the majority view - or Luke has read Matthew, the view originating with Austin Farrer and developed with vigour by Michael Goulder.
Theories about the Synoptic Gospels stand or fall because of the degree of plausibility which scholars find in the argument.
Goulder takes for granted his solution to the synoptic problem in his discussion of 'fatigue' but he does not use the phenomenon as an argument for that solution.

The idea that Thomas is independent of (or "autonomous from," if you will) the synoptics does not depend on either of these "assertions." It does, however, depend on a saying-by-saying comparison of parallels with the synoptics, such as the type of comparison Mahlon made some time ago concerning the parable of the Mustard Seed.

Doctrinal Character.—In this Gospel, more decidedly than in either of the other two Synoptics, there is a doctrinal point of view from which the whole history is regarded.
The effect is produced partly by the comments of the evangelist, which especially take the form of citations from the Old Testament; partly by the frequency with which certain expressions are used, and the prominence that is given in this and other ways to particular traits and topics.

 CORRELATION ANALYSIS
Stephen Patterson recently concluded that "a comparison of the order followed by the Gospel of Thomas on the one hand, and the synoptic gospels on the other, has turned up little that would support the theory that the former is dependent upon the latter." 140.
This procedure produces correlation statistics relating the order of sayings in Thomas to the order of sayings in synoptics as well as correlation statistics relating the order of sayings in the synoptics which occur also in Thomas independently of their Thomasine order.
The lack of correlation in sayings order between Thomas and the synoptics or between Thomas and a source-subset of the synoptics confirms the considered conclusions of previous scholarship and provides evidence both that Thomas did not use the synoptics as a source for sayings.

Moreover, while one can read the synoptics profitably with this background, there are other tools we can bring to bear that can help clarify what the Matthew and Luke were doing in writing their gospels.
In fact, we’ve already been heavily into one of them, called source criticism; that is, determining where the authors got their material.
Today I want to put redaction criticism to work, applying it to the question of what we can infer from the synoptics about when each of them was written.

John among the Gospels   (Site not responding. Last check: )
John's difference from the other gospel narratives was recognized by such ancient Christian writers as Clement of Alexandria in the late second century, Origen in the early third century, and Eusebius in the early fourth century, who set the stage for opposing views of John's relation to the Synoptics.
John was deemed either compatible with, if supplementary to, the other canonical Gospels, as Clement and Eusebius believed, or obviously at odds historically with the companion works, according to Origen's opposing view.
In a new, final chapter included in the second edition of John among the Gospels, Smith emphasizes the difficulty of determining what constitutes redaction and how the apparently redactional or compositional elements found their way into the Gospel of John.
