Topic: Synovial cell sarcoma

  Synovial Sarcoma
MAGE antigen expression in monophasic and biphasic synovial sarcoma.
Synovial sarcomas usually occur in the soft tissues of the extremities of adolescents and middle-aged patients, in the vicinity of large joints.
Synovial sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of biphasic and monophasic spindle cell neoplasms of the mediastinum.

 Soft Tissue Sarcomas
Soft tissue sarcomas are a diverse group of cancers that collectively comprise 15% of all "skin" and subcutaneous cancers in the dog and 7% in the cat.' The annual incidence of soft tissue sarcomas in the dog is about 35 per 100,000 dogs at risk and 17 per 100,000 cats at risk.
Most sarcomas are solitary in the older dog or cat and no definite sex or breed predilection is known except for synovial sarcomas, in which the ratio of males to females is 3:2.5 Rhabdomyosarcoma may occur in animals as young as 4 months.
Synovial sarcomas are malignant neoplasms thought to arise from tenosynovial tissue in either the joints, bursa, or tendon sheaths and are considered rare in dogs and cats.

Synovial sarcoma is rare, representing approximately 5-10% of all soft tissue sarcomas.
Clinical: Synovial sarcoma usually presents within the first 3 decades of life and generally is associated with a history of a small nodule that has increased rapidly in size.
Plain radiograph may aid in the diagnosis as synovial sarcoma typically produces spotty calcification (snowstorm) within the matrix of the soft tissue tumor that may be visualized on plain radiograph (see Image 1).

 Cancer
Synovial sarcoma, a soft tissue cancer that most often occurs around leg or arm joints, has a 50% rate of metastasis.
At near confluence, the cells were treated with the nutrient formulation (NS) dissolved in media and tested at 0, 10, 100, 500, and 1000 ?g/ml in triplicate at each dose.
The invasion of human synovial sarcoma cells through Matrigel was significantly reduced at 500 µg/ml (79%) and totally inhibited at 1000 µg/ml concentration of the synergistically acting nutrient mixture (p<0.0001).

Soft Tissue Sarcoma Treatment in Adults and Children
Soft tissue sarcomas are treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.
At Mayo Clinic soft tissue sarcomas are treated with two goals in mind: to cure the cancer and to save as much function of the affected area as possible.
Soft tissue (non-bone) sarcomas are rare, but they can occur in many parts of the body such as muscle or fat of the extremities or the trunk.

 Canine Osteosarcoma
There are only a few other possible conditions that cause lytic lesions in bone: the chondrosarcoma, or the squamous cell carcinoma, or the synovial cell sarcoma.
The squamous cell carcinoma is a tumor of the external coating of the bone (called the “periosteum”).
The squamous cell carcinoma tends not to arise in the same bone areas as the osteosarcoma; it tends to arise in the jaw bones or in the toe bones.

NM inhibited the growth of tumors by 50% and exhibited dose-response toxicity to cells in vitro, with 50% toxicity at 1000 µg/ml.
NS caused a significant increase in apoptotic cells in the preG(1) phase.
It is important to note that the exposure of tumor cells to NM before their injection to the mice completely prevented development of lung tumors (100% inhibition of metastasis).
