The synth which threw me for a loop the most was the Kawai 5000 (and I have one of those too!).
I found the soft synth filters to be the weakest in general.
If you really sit down and try each synth yourself and experiment with it and make your own presets I'm sure you will be able to tell the difference.

So.....basically, styles have usual sounds which identify the style !!....What we need is to get a good compromise between the sounds that are particular for a style, or what people want to hear, and some originality to go with it....
These FM synths are the foundation of House, Garage, original Chicago Techno and alot of other styles.....Your sound arsenal will not be complete without one......They do all the cheezey little organ sounds....harp type patches.....tuned percussive stuff.....solid & hollow basses etc etc....
These synths definately do sound more upfront & raw than sampled analog wave synths, but the price is usually high on top of the limited multi-parts thing........

 Soft Synths Begone!
I agree with Tom that for multi sampled stuff synth style semi weighted keys will provide the best results unless you really want to manualy crossfade between every note (if you even have the option).....but thats just my opinion mainly because I cant stand fully weighted keys having started with synth action.
I agree that expecting a synth to do good piano sounds is a little unrealistic, but IMHO these are some examples of some decent software based options that are available.
So what it comes down to is Synth A must definitely stand out from Synth B. And I'd bet they go through about everything to acheive that end.
