Syracuse University was chartered in 1870 as a Methodist-Episcopal institution; it has grown from a few classrooms located in downtown Syracuse into a major research institution.

The armory is located on 3.5 acres of land along East Genesee Street and University Avenue in the City of Syracuse.
Built in 1941, the armory served as headquarters and base of operations for various New York Army National Guard units from 1942 to 2002, at which time National Guard operations were transferred to a more modern facility on Thompson Road adjacent to Hancock Field.
The former armory has been declared to be surplus property by The Adjutant General of New York State, meaning it is no longer needed or necessary for military operations.
