Adding to the confusion is petite syrah (aka petite sirah), once thought to be a syrah grape but now considered a different varietal altogether.
Howard Silverman of Howard's Wine Cellar in Chicago said syrah from France and shiraz from Australia "aren't the same animal." Because of the cooler weather, French syrahs are more austere, more mineral, with notes of leather and licorice, he said.
"Syrah is the new merlot but a good merlot as opposed to a bad merlot," said Silverman, who is vocal in his distaste for most merlots.
