Syringe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nowadays the word "syringe" is restricted to smaller devices, used to transfer small amounts of liquids or gases to or from otherwise inaccessible areas, including particularly hypodermic syringes used with a needle for injection.
Hypodermic syringes are used with hypodermic needles to inject liquid or gases into body tissues, or to remove from the body.
The barrel of a syringe is made of plastic or glass, and usually has graduated marks indicating the volume of fluid in the syringe.

 Syringe Summary
Syringes are used to transfer small amounts of liquids or gasses to or from otherwise inaccesible areas.
Syringes are used in conjunction with hypodermic needles for injections of liquid or gasses into body tissues, or for their removal from the body.
Glass syringes may be sterilized by the use of an autoclave, however, modern medical syringes are made from plastic because it is cost-effective to dispose of them, which further reduces the risk of spreading blood-borne diseases.

 Syringes
These are luer slip syringes without needles that are excellent for administering measured amounts of Parvaid, Feline Distemper, CS, tinctures, etc. Reinforced tip, large finger grips, smooth draw, easy-to-read graduations, latex free, sterile, non-toxic, and pyrogen free.
We suggest two syringes, one for oral doses and one for enema doses (if not being given Sub Q fluids or on IV's, enemas are or may be necessary to prevent dehydration).
Make sure to mark the enema syringe clearly, as you never want to accidentally use an enema syringe for an oral dose, even after it's been washed, as you can reinfect a puppy with parvo or a kitten with distemper.

Reading and Using 1cc Syringes (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
One cc syringes have markings showing tenths of a cc:.10 is one-tenth of a cc; 1.0 is one cc; these two measures are frequently confused.
If you still see air bubbles in the syringe, hold it pointed toward the ceiling and flick or tap your finger against the side of the syringe; this forces the bubbles up toward the hub of the syringe and you can push the collected air out of the needle.
Syringes typically used in small animal and reptile care are 1cc, 3cc, 6cc, 12cc, 35cc, and 60cc.

Syringe pumps are devices generally used for small-volume infusions with very low flow rates.
Volume to be infused is limited by the size of the syringe, with a maximum of 140 ml., the size of the largest commercially available syringe (the Excelsior pump will infuse the larger syringes).
At the same speed, a 60 ml BD syringe will deliver at a rate of 78.1 ml/hr; even though the motor speed is the same (the plunger closes at the same rate of travel), the larger volume of the syringe allows more fluid to be infused.

Pressure hypodermic syringe - Patent 4592742
This invention refers to a pressure hypodermic syringe designed to inject intradermal, subcutaneous or intramuscular liquid medication, in which rather than the conventional hypodermic needle the tip contains only a small orifice that comes in direct contact with the skin of the person who is to receive a dose of the medication to be injected.
Although the common glass or disposable hypodermic syringe involves the trauma and discomfort of the "pinprick", it is still widely used because it remains the simplest and safest device available in the market for hypodermic injection of desired doses of insulin.
Design of this new syringe therefore must aim at the simplicity and safety of a conventional hypodermic syringe while providing the means to inject variable doses of liquid medication under pressure and without the aid of a needle.

Syringe Prescription in Rhode Island: A Case Study
Access to sterile syringes is critical to lower the risk for transmission of HIV and other blood borne pathogens among injection drug users.
By definition, the prescription of syringes involves a physician-patient relationship (or perhaps a physician/ health care provider relationship, in the case of physician assistants or nurse practitioners), for a group that is at high risk for many diseases, and who often do not access health care.
Syringes are prescribed, usually 100 at a time, and additional syringes are prescribed by the physician as often as necessary to prevent the re-use and sharing of syringes.

In response to questions on the usage of syringe stoppers (or syringe followers) which Asymtek and its customers use in packaging fluids this customer update was created.
Syringe stoppers/followers go inside a syringe over the top of the fluid.
They serve several purposes: they help prevent spillage when the syringe is tipped, they wipe the fluid from the syringe wall during dispensing to help get all the fluid out of the syringe, they protect the fluid from moisture, and they help prevent mixing air with the fluid.

Clean Syringe Exchange Pilot Program | Community Services
The Clean Syringe Exchange Pilot Program has been created to address a public health crisis related to Hepatitis C and HIV epidemics which are exacerbated by the shared use of needles and syringes by injection drug users.
The number of syringes exchanged per visit should be sufficient to provide the typical client with a clean syringe for each injection for one week.
Clean syringe exchange attendance was associated with a decrease in risky syringe sharing, and those participants who entered treatment reduced their drug use and engaged in less criminal activity for profit.
