The Syro Malabar Church was once called the Church of the St. Thomas Christians, because the church was founded by the apostle Thomas, who is believed to have gone to India in 52 A.D. and been martyred there in 72 A.D. near what is now the town of Madras.
The pope recognized it as a sui juris (semi-autonomous) church in 1992.

The second autonomous church in the Catholic Church, the SMC hierarchy has been divided into camps on the question of its liturgical patrimony.
Acknowledging that these kind of protests "malign" the church and church leaders, the bishops cautioned that action will be taken against church members who indulge in such "painful and deplorable" protests, said a press release from the SMC secretariat.
