  System/360
Unlike most systems, IBM created an entire line of computers (or CPUs) from small to large, all running the same command set.
The cheapest model was the 360/20 with 24k of memory, only half the registers of other models and the instruction set was not binary-compatible with the rest of the range.
The System/360 introduced a number of the standards for the industry, such as 8-bit bytes (although there was financial pressure during development to reduce the byte to 4 or 6 bits!) and byte addressable memory, 32-bit words, segmented and paged memory, the EBCDIC character set and was the first to use microcode.

 IBM Archives: System/360 Announcement
System/360 is a single system spanning the performance range of virtually all current IBM computers - - from the widely used 1401 to nearly twice that of the most powerful computer previously built by the company.
It is the balancing of these factors - - all available within a single system using one set of programming instructions - - that will make it possible for a user to select a configuration suited to his own requirements for both commercial and scientific computing.
Hundreds of terminal devices can communicate simultaneously with a system while the computer continues to process the basic job on which it is working.

 Lawrence Wilkinson's IBM 360/30 Saga.
While the IBM 360 is of course a 32 bit machine, the Model 30 was internally an 8 bit system, so it had to do any computations four times.
All those books in the library on 'Learning IBM 360 Assembler Language' suddenly had a great new significance, though most of my initial work was derived from the listings in the diagnostic manuals, plus the fact that the 1802 mnemonics seemed to mirror those of the 360.
Unfortunately the whole system was designed to run to a mainframe via a modem, so access to the whole thing was via a serial link, and these were somewhat lacking on the /360.

I believe that the term "360" was coined by IBM to express their ambition to encompass the customers' needs at a 360-degree angle.
System installation was accomplished through sysgen, a time-consuming, difficult and tedious process performed in two stages: building the system and defining the I/O configuration.
The two stages of a sysgen were assembling the system definition (including I/O) and assembling the output of stage 1.

By a process known technically as "System Generation" (a variety of the biological process known as partheno-genesis, normally found only in certain insects, such as wasps), OS was able to manifest itself in a bewildering variety of shapes and sizes.
It will be mourned by its many friends and particularly by the over 10,000 system programmers throughout the world who owe their jobs to its existance.
Funeral arrangements have not been released by IBM, but OS is expected to lie in state in a large number of 360's and 370's for at least two years.
