The 360/67, first shipped in August, 1966, was the first IBM system to offer dynamic address translation ("DAT", now more commonly referred to as an MMU) and virtual machine capabilities to its users in conjunction with its CP-67 operating system.
TSS/360 (Time-Sharing System, a Multics copy) was promised, but it never worked properly and was replaced with either CP-67 (made to run on the S/360 Model 67, as mentioned above), MTS (Michigan Terminal System), TSO (Time Sharing Option for OS/360), or one of several other time-sharing systems.
The IBM 1130 was a low cost computer system based on the System/360 SLT approach, which was sometimes used as a remote job entry system for the System/360.

The system is typically used in business and banking, and applications are often written in COBOL.

System management, done in the past with a 3270 terminal, is now done through the Hardware Management Console (HMC) and, increasingly, Web interfaces.

Minicomputer - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Minicomputer is a largely obsolete term for a class of multi-user computers which make up the middle range of the computing spectrum, in between the largest multi-user systems (mainframe computers) and the smallest single-user systems (microcomputers or personal computers).
At the time microcomputers were single-user, relatively simple machines running simple program-launcher operating systems like CP/M or DOS, while minis were much more powerful systems that ran full multi-user, multitasking operating systems like VMS and Unix.
Significantly, Windows NT was written largely by designers from DEC who were responsible for the DEC VMS operating system, originally developed for the VAX minicomputer range in the 1970s.

The IBM PC Server S/390 system is a combination of the System/390 and PC Server architectures that provides access and use of both in a single package.
CMS users were then logged onto on the measured system, and the users ran their scripts with TPNS measuring the end user response time through the VTAM network.
Because the S/390 operating system is probably serving multiple clients accessing the system over LAN or other communication methods, you would not want users of the S/390 operating system to receive lower priority for the S/390 I/Os in the event someone opens an OS/2 application or window in the foreground.

The System/390 architecture is introduced, and its history and design are briefly discussed, including IBM's operating system VM, which allows virtualization of the System/390 and hence a way to split the machine into a large number of virtual machines.
In practice it is more difficult, since although the instructions themselves have not changed, the interface to operating system services certainly has as operating systems have come and gone.
A university (universities are traditionally good places to find underutilized mainframes with pre-existent VM licenses) might want to run an advanced operating systems or networking class where you can give each student his or her own machine.

S/390 is IBM's large server (or mainframe) line of computer systems, which are marketed to the world's Fortune 1000 and many mid-size companies as a "tried-and-true" system with a history that stretches back to the System/360 of the early 1960s.
The S/390 combines a hardware design based on the use of multiple microprocessor packaging with the OS/390 operating system, whose multitasking architecture and long evolution (most of the bugs have already been found) results in a system that seldom crashes.
IBM's VM operating system also runs on the S/390.

 Linux on the System/390
Linux/390, however, is not (unlike Unix System Services, a platform to make porting Unix applications to OS/390 and VM easier) EBCDIC; it's a plain old ASCII system.
The System/390 port was originally bootstrapped by writing a cross-compiling backend to GCC that produced System/390 code, cross-compiling glibc for the 390 architecture, and then uploading those and the kernel built with them to a real System/390.
Their prices start at about $15,000, but on a high-end Intel system, you can get quite a bit more CPU power than you can from a P/390.

Newsbytes News Network: Revenues Down, But System/390 Is Thriving - IBM
IBM is driving down the price of the System/390 to restore the appeal that mainframe computers in general lost as customers flocked to smaller systems, networks, and client/server computing in the 1980s.
The keystone of that effort is OS/390, the flagship mainframe operating system, for which the company is pursuing full Unix branding.
According to Puglia and Dawalibi, corporate computer users have begun in the last couple of years to realize that client/server computing cannot solve all their problems and the reliability and scalability of mainframes mean they still have a place in most organizations.
