System 7 (Macintosh) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
System 7 was used in the early 1990s up until 1997, succeeding System 6.
"System Extensions" (small pieces of code that extended the system's functionality) were improved by relocating them to their own subfolder (rather than in the System Folder itself as on earlier versions), and by allowing the user to hold down the shift key during bootup to disable them.
System 7 was the first version of the Mac OS that required a hard drive for installation as a full installation was too large to fit on the capacity of a 1.44 MB floppy disk.

 System 7 - WikiMac
System 7 (whose codename being "Big Bang", reflects on the considerable changes that came with the OS) is the term used to refer to the Mac OS that superseded the earlier versions known simply as "The System", or "System 6", and before the use of the term "Mac OS" came into official use.
System 7.0 was released for the Apple Macintosh on May 13, 1991.
System 7 started to pave the way to move to a full 32-bit address space, from the previous 24-bit address space, which limited memory to a maximum of 8MB.

 Macintosh System 7.5 reviewed
Unlike System 7 Pro, which was an expensive point release aimed at people who needed the kitchen sink on their desktop -- with networking, scripting, foreign language support, and electronic mail thrown in -- System 7.5 is aimed squarely at the Mac User on the Clapham Omnibus.
System 7.5 is a critical part of Apple's journey towards their goal of becoming The Other Microsoft.
Hidden in its guts is a sophisticated pre-emptive multi-threading system; although it still uses cooperative multitasking at the application level, System 7.5 provides the infrastructure for a rumoured micro-kernel based operating system that Apple are said to be working on.

Macintosh system software frequently asked questions (FAQ)
When About this Macintosh (About the Finder in System 6) is selected from the Apple menu, the system reports all the memory it can't use as part of the system memory allocation.
There's also a bug in the System 6 cache code that may cause a peformance hit on disk access if the cache is larger than 128K so this trick is more likely to help Macs running System 7, but again experiment to see what works for you.
The tuneup includes a number of fixes and enhancements to System 7, including substantially faster printer drivers, a StyleWriter driver that supports background printing, a fix that saves several hundred kilobytes of memory on non-networked Macs, and, most importantly, a vaccine for the disappearing folders bug.

In 1996 Apple introduced a major update to the MacOS operating system, and called the System both "System 7.5 Update 2.0" (meaning the second update to MacOS 7.5) and "System 7.5.3" (since MacOS 7.5, once updated, became System 7.5.3).
Finally, hundreds of thousands of other users (perhaps millions) failed to note that this was an update of System 7.5 (and 7.5.1 and 7.5.2), not the earlier System 7 or System 7.1.
If you are running System 7.5 and wish to upgrade to 7.5.3, your ultimate goal should be System 7.5.3, Revision 2.
