Console game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Consoles use a large sized (albeit low-resolution) television as their visual output device: optimal for viewing at a greater distance by a larger audience.
This is because video game consoles had dedicated graphics hardware, were able to load data instantly from ROM, and a low resolution output would look better on a television because it naturally blurs the pixels.
These concerns have led to voluntary rating systems adopted by the industry, such as the ESRB rating system in the United States and the PEGI rating system in Europe(see above), that are aimed at educating parents about the types of games their children should or should not be playing (or are begging to play).

While the console space is littered with disappointments like the Sega Master System and the Jaguar, there have also been a handful of systems that crashed and burned, and did so for pretty much good reason.
As a home console, it depended too much on people's willingness to shell out over $2000 for a laserdisc player (which was only just starting to be used by high end videophiles) and then on top of that, connect it to the console itself, which only had two games available (eight were planned).
As a console afficionado, I always looked at the Halcyon as something of a joke...but that was until I saw a recent re-release of Dragon's Lair, which had some cool extras, one of which was a television segment about the Dragon's Lair arcade phenomenon.

 Which Console Should I Buy?
Console gaming has been a three-headed monster for a long time, and there is no reason to believe that the market won’t keep all three systems alive for the duration of their usefulness.
Now that consoles are up to par with PCs, the phrase "all systems" includes the PC, a turn that was unprecedented until the current generation of hardware.
Console systems aren’t necessarily something you buy with an eye toward the future – we want to play the games we want to play right here and right now.

Video game console   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Once, video game consoles were easily distinguishable from personal computers: consoles used a standard television for display, and did not support standard PC accessories such as keyboards or modems.
The emulation of older video game consoles, such as the NES and SNES, is generally less contested by the manufacturers.
Note that the "bit" names of generations were in large part created by the console makers' marketing departments and may have little to do with the actual architecture of the systems.

Older game consoles and their software now live on in emulators as they are no longer supported by their manufacturers.
However, console makers try to prevent their games from being played on emulators using copyright-like exclusive rights in mask works and a protection of encrypted media created by the United States' Digital Millennium Copyright Act and foreign counterparts.
Video game consoles have created a whole self supporting market for thousands of different video game accessory manufacturers who would otherwise not be able to produce their own video game consoles.

If the Systems Management Server Provider is on a separate server from the Systems Management Server site server (such as the SQL Server), you must also verify that the Systems Management Server Admins group has at appropriate WBEM permissions to the local site server.

There was even some talk in late 2002 of the PlayStation 3 not being a "console" at all, but rather more of an operating system that would be built-in and incorporated into "various home appliances" (as Sony told Reuters).
And if the company's prior two consoles and the upcoming PSP are any indication -- which they clearly are -- the PS3 should be another great success for Sony.
