  Protecting System Integrity
The basic idea behind system integrity is this: by periodically monitoring the changes that occur to a computer's files and directories, it becomes a simple matter to later determine 1) if a machine has been exploited, and 2) what changes were made to the system by the exploit.
Without system integrity, it is difficult to detect if an exploit has occurred, and next to impossible to perform a comprehensive cleanup of the machine, short of a complete OS and application reinstall.
System integrity checking is only one piece in the puzzle of computer security, but clearly it's a valuable one—and one that is becoming more important every day.

Enhancing File System Integrity Through Checksums
A stackable file system has many advantages: significant among them being minimal development overhead, portability, no change to the existing file systems etc. When it is easy to develop a stackable file system, there are some operations that cannot be done using it.
Since a stackable file system has the responsibility of being good to a variety of underlying file systems, it provides a higher level abstraction to the level of a file, which makes certain lower level operations almost impossible to perform from the stackable level.
In the particular context of a stackable file system where the underlying file system can always be directly accessed, checksumming metadata is required to determine if change of metadata like access time and modify time are made even if there is no change to the file data.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE TRUSTED COMPUTER SYSTEM EVALUATION CRITERIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In class (B2) systems, the TCB is based on a clearly defined and documented formal security policy model that requires the discretionary and mandatory access control enforcement found in class (B1) systems be extended to all subjects and objects in the ADP system.
A trusted ADP system control and distribution facility shall be provided for maintaining the integrity of the mapping between the master data describing the current version of the TCB and the on-site master copy of the code for the current version.
Systems that are used to process or handle classified or other sensitive information must be designed to guarantee correct and accurate interpretation of the security policy and must not distort the intent of that policy.

 Maintaining System Integrity During Forensics
Deciding how to maintain the integrity of a system for use in a forensic examination can be a little like deciding which club to use to get out of the rough on the last hole of a golf tournament, i.e.
In this real-world scenario, maintaining the integrity of the crime scene means protecting any potential evidence from being damaged or destroyed and preventing and false evidence from being introduced to the area in question.
Maintaining the integrity of a computer system for use in a forensic examination is a similar process in principle but, as we shall see, presents very different challenges to the investigator.

RTOS - INTEGRITY Features - Real-Time Operating System - Green Hills Software
INTEGRITY incorporates an optional ARINC-653 optimized, two-level partition scheduler that provides a guaranteed CPU time window for an address space in which that address space's tasks always will be able to run.
For example, in a system with 2 tasks at the same priority, A and B, if Task B spawns 2 subtasks, B1 and B2, INTEGRITY can be configured to force all 3 "B" Tasks to share equally the CPU budget originally allocated to Task B (50%).
INTEGRITY provides a target shell, accessible via telnet or rlogin, which enables the developer to communicate directly with the target, even before any application code is running.

Whether that person is you or a paid guard, you cannot assume that your system is functioning properly unless you periodically verify it personally.
You certainly don't want the system to be annoying, but you surely want the system to be "a little bit more critical than it needs to be", rather than a little bit "less"...

Proposals for universal voting machines fail to address the sheer impossibility of creating an ubiquitous system that could conform with each of the varying and often conflicting election laws of the individual states.
Paper-based systems are not totally bad; some simple fixes (such as printing the candidates' names directly on the ballot and automated validity checks before ballot deposit) could go a long way in reducing user error and improving auditability.
