KIANGAN, IFUGAO- To increase the yield of Ifugao rice farmers and help preserve the province’s rice terraces, the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM) introduced the system of rice intensification (SRI) to upland rice farmers.
Shubert Ciencia, PRRM’s branch manger in Central Luzon, said the system was proven successful in doubling the yield of farmers even at a low cost and could even match the output of new hybrid rice varieties.
They succeeded in painting, during the recent mid-year economic briefing, a country that has performed well in the first six months of 2005 compared with its neighbors.

SRI, a system of rice intensification, developed in the 1980s in Madagascar, by raising rice yields significantly, could take some of the pressures of agricultural expansion off the watersheds, areas around the lake, and the marshes on the edge of the lake itself.
The low-lying areas around the lake are considered as the country's "rice basket," having large stretches of suitable rice land.
This town located on the southeastern side of Lac Alaotra—Madagascar's largest inland body of water—is the commercial center for the region.

The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) has been tested to significantly increase rice yield from the country’s average of 3.5 tons per hectare to 12-15 tons while maintaining soil fertility, without the use of modern seeds and chemical fertilizers, and even less irrigation water.
PRRM and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) are jointly documenting SRI practice and validating results in a three-year project covering five (5) provinces (Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Camarines Sur, Negros Occidental and North Cotabato).
The SRI is perceived by PRRM as best complemented by the use of SeaCrop, the brand name of its fortified organic fertilizer products.

Thailand has a relatively well developed system of infrastructure, in particular a road network that has been greatly improved during the past 30 years and has opened up even thinly populated regions.
The above-mentioned extension of Thailand's wet-rice areas during the last 30 years is probably in the main the result of such a local farm land expansion.
Besides upland crops the areas under wet-rice cultivation in Thailand have also been expanded considerably in the last 30 years, although this tendency has gradually been decreasing during recent years (National Statistical Office of Thailand 1984).
