Four CD's and nearly ten years into their career, System of a Down continue to be the Gilbert and Sullivan of this generation, delivering razor-sharp political commentary via beautiful, quirky melodies and discordant harmonies.
The album brings you a variety of haunting, melodic and hyperactive songs that are bound to stay stuck in your head.
The album length is shorter than their previous releases, but you have to remember that "Toxicity" isn't that long of an album, either.

Tower Records - Hypnotize [Explicit Lyrics] [Digipak] * - System Of A Down
Just when it seemed that System of a Down couldn't do anything to improve on their standing as the most unique and ambitious band in the alternative metal world, they decided to drop their sprawling, Rick Rubin-produced double album by releasing each disc separately.
The albums were recorded in the same sessions--so there is a strong sense of musical cohesion, and even the CD packages themselves are designed to fit together to form one set.
System of a Down’s “Soldier” is an unforgettable, yet freighting painting of a world engulfed in hurt, and molested by war.

ROCKZONE.COM: CD Reviews: System of a Down - Steal This Album!
This is an album review, and not a venue for me to spout off personal politics, but I do like the fact that a band is willing to speak their mind, especially if it is intellectually, and goes against the supposed "norm."
System does all this and more, using mindpenetratingly catchy riffs and choruses so you don't forget a word of what they played.
On particular curve ball on this album is the acoustic, percussionless, "Roulette" which, aside from the singing, doesn't sound like it could be a product of this very heavy band.

System Of A Down needs no introduction; their infamous 1998 self-titled debut sent ripples through the metal community with its own sense of musical direction and personality.
The album would not be the masterpiece that it is if it wasn't for subtleties such as audacious backing vocals, citars, cellos, violins, and a wide assortment of percussion.

Mind you, to be aesthetically pleasing is not System’s way: "She’s On Heroin" and "Stealing Society" are lurid snapshots of society at its most grotesque, schizophrenic canvases of thrash metal and dizzying Cossack rhythms as warped and twisted as the drug addicts and insane dictators they inevitably depict.
I think a lot of people jumped on the System of a Down bandwagon because of Toxicity's melody combined with the hook of Serj's unique vocals; these albums are a lot more complex in construction, so no doubt these "fans" will just download the "funny" tracks and not actually listen to the music.
From the start the double album project of Mesmerize/Hypnotise was to be Darren's brainchild, with most of the lyrics and music written by him, as well as him taking front seat as lead singer of the band.

System Of A Down’s political statements would be so much more effective if they would only learn how to couch their outsider-isms within pointed stories, instead of just shouting out predictable slogans.

Toxicity, System’s second album, appeared on Sept. 4, 2001 and was at the top of the charts on Sept. 12, while America and the world were paralyzed with grief, shock and fear.
The album generated four Top 10 singles, including the #1 “Aerials,” and went on to sell 6 million copies, establishing System not as some prefab mainstream commercial entity but rather as an urgent voice in the uncharted wilderness that was heard—and believed—by a great many human beings.
With Steal!, System, which up to that point had pitched nothing but fastballs (although some were of the split-finger variety), showed that it had a command of all kinds of stuff, and potent stuff at that.

System of a Down - "Mezmerize" - Album Review - The Red Alert
When “B.Y.O.B.” landed on the desks of radio and MTV as System of a Down’s new lead single, some faces must have fallen.
System of a Down sound very much in their comfort zone—which is to say “all over the place”—rampaging through state-of-the union rockers (“Sad Statue”), channeling “Hava Nagila” and Fiddler On The Roof (“Radio/Video”), and having a laugh at macho posturing (“Cigaro”) and celebrity functions (“Old School Hollywood”).
Producer Rick Rubin is high on hyperbole when he proclaims System “the only heavy band that matters,” but they are, without question, the only band of their kind, and Mezmerize is their best and fullest work to date.

System of a Down: Steal This Album! - PopMatters Music Review
Fronted by the outspoken, powerful-voiced Serj Tankian and guitarist extraordinaire Daron Malakian, System of a Down combined the whacked-out genius of Frank Zappa, 1980s aggro punk like the Dead Kennedys, old-school thrash metal, and Eastern musical influences into an unmistakably original signature sound of their own.
Toxicity took things considerably more further than their eponymous debut album, possessing more of a grandiose feel, the band completely unafraid to shed their punk roots a bit more and go for the really soaring, transcendent melodies.
The album was a roaring success, as the band co-headlined the 2002 Ozzfest tour.
