  Encyclopedia: Systems design
Systems design is the process or art of defining the hardware and software architecture, components, modules, interfaces, and data for a computer system to satisfy specified requirements.
Systems theory is an interdisciplinary field which studies relationships of systems as a whole.
Object-oriented analysis and design methods are becoming the most widely used methods for system design.

In this case, the design process must help to bridge the gap between the design experts and the end-users in such a way as to ensure that the end-users are able to express their desires and can communicate these to the experts.
The system is required to understand concepts such as linkages of components, gravitation (or rather that objects must sit on other objects), and a breakdown of working areas to trace the intended progress of the work.
In some cases, a plant may be designed to show others, with the VR tool acting as a high technology viewer of the proposed plant – perhaps to convince investors of the benefits and safety of the proposed system.

Design Research in Information Systems   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Design research is yet another "lens" or set of analytical techniques and perspectives (complementing the Positivist and Interpretive perspectives) for performing research in IS. Design research involves the analysis of the use and performance of designed artifacts to understand, explain and very frequently to improve on the behavior of aspects of Information Systems.
Design then, is knowledge in the form of techniques and methods for performing this mapping – the know-how for implementing an artifact that satisfies a set of functional requirements.
Bunge (1984) implies that design research is most effective when its practitioners shift between pragmatic and critical realist perspectives, guided by a pragmatic assessment of progress in the design cycle.  Purao (2002) presents a very rich elaboration on the perspective shifts that accompany any iterative design cycle.

System Design Page. A Solar Power Primer.
For off-grid systems, the challenge is to make sure the system can supply the surge power necessary, and keep within the desired amount of generator run time.
For grid-tie systems, design can be simpler if the system has no batteries and the grid acts as a backup.
Finally there is a hybrid type of grid-tied system where the grid acts as a backup for the solar panels, and batteries act as a backup for the grid.

Computer Systems Design and Related Services
The computer systems design and related services industry is expected to experience rapid growth, adding 453,000 jobs between 2004 and 2014.
At the same time, the computer systems design and related services industry has experienced an increase in the contracting out of some of the more routine services abroad, where labor costs are lower, as companies strive to remain competitive.
Unionization is rare in the computer systems design and related services industry; only 1 percent of all workers are union members or are covered by union contracts, compared with 14 percent of workers throughout private industry.

 Creating Learning Communities
From this perspective, evolution is conceived as irreversible change that moves a system further and further from the inert state of thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium.
Just as the concept “system” is more a pattern than a thing, ELC is best conceived as an ideal image of community that can serve as a beacon for the design of new social systems appropriate for a new evolutionary era.
Evolutionary Systems Design is an approach for realizing the vision of a sustainable and evolutionary learning society — a paidea, as the ancient Greeks called a society where the promotion of life-long learning and the achievement of the human potential in the broadest sense was a central priority.

This “systems thinking” approach to design held the attention of the design professions from the mid-1950s to the early-1970s.
Around 1960 an explicit transition occurred as the discipline shifted from examining systems that are physical and objective to those that are psychological and linguistic, while still applying the same framework.
