Szczecin is situated in the north-west corner of Poland, on both banks of the Oder River, close to Baltic Sea and the German border.
After their extinction Szczecin fell to Sweden till 1720 (despite the Polish protests), then to Prussia, from 1870 part of the nation-state Germany, until 1945, when it was occupied by the Red Army and annexed to Poland, while its original inhabitants were expelled and the city colonized with Poles.
Szczecin's architectural style is mainly influenced by those of last half of 19th century and first twenty years of the 20th century mostly by Academic art and Art Nouveau.

Scientific Conference of the PASL entitled: ‘Nutrition in liver disease’ was held in Szczecin (organized by Anna Boroń MDPhD) with 150 participants and foreign lecturers: Marsha Y. Morgan, Mathias Plauth, Claudio Tiribelli, Nurdan Tozun, Manfred Mueller, Stig Bengmark.
The conference was focused on the issue of pathophysiology of malnutrition and of the role of dietary treatment in chronic liver disease in adults and children, especially cholestatic liver disease and enteral and parenteral nutrition after surgery of the liver and biliary tree.

The Baltic Institute (Instytut Bałtycki) in Gdańsk is a scientific society researching the topics of the Baltic Sea countries, maritime economic issues, and Polish-German and Polish-Scandinavian relations.
The Baltic Institute was established in 1925 in Toruń, beginning real activities in 1927, with the main goal of documenting the Polish heritage in Pomerania after 100 years of German occupation and Germanization practices.
During the big reorganization of the scientific societies in Pomerania, in 1950 the instutute became a part of the Western Institute in Poznań, but was made independent again in 1958 with the headquarters in Gdańsk.
