 THE DACO-ROMAN LEGEND
Maria Holban deals in detail with the argument [52] which took shape between the Transylvanian Bishop and the Provost of Szeben, who was supposed to fulfill the provostship's position, which recently had become unoccupied.
The Transylvanian Bishop considered the provostship's foundation in Szeben as a transgression against his sphere of authority.
The provostship of Szeben would have gotten hold of all the Saxon dwellers, including those who had belonged to the Transylvanian episcopacy before.

The original limits of the diocese varied somehat from the present boundaries, as they included the County of Mármaros, while the provostship of Szeben was exempt and some parts of the Szekler country were subject to the Bishop of Milkovia in Rumania.
The see was again imperilled by the advance of the Turks, but its decay did not set in until the sixteenth centruy, and was caused by the progress of Lutheranism, in consequence of which the exempt provostship of Szeben ceased to exist, and by internal disturbancea in Transylvania.
The exempt provostship of Szeben was incorporated in the bishopric, which was completely restored under Maria Theresa in 1771.
