Szekely is one of San Diego's best-known and most-beloved personalities and certainly one of the most accomplished.
Szekely tells the story fondly, though at the time she was not terribly amused, "We had to carry the water to water the vegetables, my brother and I," she says with a chuckle.
Szekely's desire for a naturalistic garden inspired her daughter to design a simple but elegant wooden fence that screens the pool garden from the canyon garden below.

Szekely was best known for his research accomplishments, which included the development of a comprehensive mathematical model of fluid-flow, electromagnetics, and heat transfer for the refinement of metals.
Szekely was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1934.
Szekely was a staunch advocate of improving relations between the United States and Japan through increased scientific and technical cooperation, and recommended increased language training and the creation of joint appointments at leading universities.

Professor Szekely was born on November 23, 1934, in Budapest, Hungary.
Over the years, Professor Szekely was a frequent visitor to Japan and, in 1990, to prepare for a five-month sabbatical at Osaka University, he took a Japanese language course at MIT.
Szekely had an extensive consulting practice, and he worked with companies and government organizations in the U.S., Japan, Latin America, Germany, Finland, Sweden and France.

Julian Szekely, a professor of materials engineering who was widely known as an expert in the development of mathematical models in materials processing operations, including analysis of the economic, technological and environmental factors involved in the production of various materials, died of cancer December 7 at the MIT Infirmary.
As an example of his pioneering work in mathematical modeling, he developed the first comprehensive mathematical model of fluid-flow, electromagnetics and heat transfer phenomena for the refinement and solidification of metals, as well as the first quantitative analysis of plasma torches and innovative approaches to circuit board attachment problems.
His survivors include his wife, Joy, of Weston; four sons, M. Thomas Szekely of Telluride, CO, Richard J. ekely, M. Tarquin Szekely and David A. ekely, all of Weston; a daughter, Rebecca Szekely of Washington, DC; a grandson, Matthew; an aunt, Lilo Racz of Budapest, Hungary; and a cousin, Kristina Gmur of Geneva, Switzerland.

She set an Olympic record in the 200-Meter Breaststroke (2:51.7) en route to a gold medal at the 1952 Helsinki Games and captured a silver medal in the same event at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956.
In the early 1940s, Szekely was expelled from her local team as a “religious undesirable” and, during 1944 and 1945, lived with her family in a Swiss-run safe house in Budapest.
