 Our history - Szmul Zygielbojm
Born in 1895 in Borowica, Poland, Szmul Zygielbojm was forced by poverty to start work in a factory at the age of 10.
In 1936 Zygielbojm moved to Lodz, the most industrial town in Poland and home of its second largest Jewish community, where he was elected to the town council.
Three weeks later, Zygielbojm committed suicide in protest at the passivity with which the world was permitting the Nazis to destroy the Jews of Europe.

Szmul Zygielbojm was born in Borowice (Lublin District) on February 21, 1895.
To escape arrest by the Germans, Zygielbojm left Poland in late 1939 and traveled to Belgium, where he worked to compile and disseminate reports to the Polish government and international press on the early persecution of the Jews in Poland.
On December 2, 1942, Jan Karski, a courier of the Polish underground, delivered to Zygielbojm a report that was among the first to describe the scope of the mass murder.

As Britain marks VE Day on May 8th, the 60th anniversary, we wikll be holding our annual meeting to remember the anti-fascist martyr Szmul Zygielbojm and the Warsaw ghetto uprising.
Zygielbojm, an active trades unionist and socialist in pre-war Poland, was sent to London during the war, to represent the Jewish workers’ Bund in the Polish parliament in exile, and to bring to world attention what was happening to his people in Poland.
Zygielbojm left a note saying that as his comrades were dying arms in hand in Warsaw, he would die in London, hoping that by his death he would gain some of the notice for their plight he had failed to win in life.
