Trnava (Hungarian: Nagyszombat, German: Tyrnau) is a town in western Slovakia, 45 km to the northeast of Bratislava, on the Trnávka river, and at the main Bratislava-Žilina railway and Bratislava-Žilina limited-access highway.
In 1238, Trnava was the first town in Slovakia to be granted a town charter (civic privileges) by the king.
In the 16th and especially the 17th century, Trnava was an important center of the Counter-Reformation in the Kingdom of Hungary (at the time largely identical with the territory of present-day Slovakia and a strip of western Hungary).

The Hungarian King Belo IV regained Trnava into his possession and in 1238 he put the town under the control of the Crown and gave it the right to freely elect the town council and the magistrate.
At the turn of 13th and 14th centuries Trnava was controlled by Matúš Čák, in 14th century it was the centre of the long-distance trade on the Czech Road and it became one of the richest and biggest Hungarian towns.
Relatively well developed school system in Trnava was already in the past specialised in new secondary schools (the Technical College, the Commercial Academy, the Medical School, the School of Transport, the School of Farming, and the School of Building).

What struck me about Trnava was the utter lack of people I encountered, and I learned that on a work day (M-F), there will be some people walking the downtown, but on weekends anyone who is anyone hops the 30-minute train to Bratislava.
