The Hrodna regional prosecutor's office on 14 February charged Mikalay Markevich, editor-in-chief of Pahonya, and Pavel Mazheyka, reporter of the same newspaper with defaming President Lukashenka in mass media and libellously accusing him of a felony (see the January and December 2001 issues of the Newsletter).
Participants of the conferences discussed the situation in the Belarus TV, perspectives for the operations of the newly established second national TV channel, and also legal basis for TV and radio broadcasting, ways to transform TV and radio in the countries in transit and possibilities for establishing public control over media and media self-regulation.
Many public figures of the Hrodna region appealed to Vasilii Litvinov, the Hrodna region prosecutor, with an open letter.

Text of report by Afghan Balkh Province television on 28 February A new independent radio station named Nawbahar Radio Station was inaugurated in a ceremony in Balkh District of Balkh Province today.
Then the governor of Balkh District made a speech and promised to give any kind of assistance to that radio station but for the time being he gave one jerib [an area of 44 by 44 meters] of land for the construction of the radio station.
At the end of the ceremony, the radio station was established and the participants attended a feast organized in the government of Balkh District.

A five-member film crew from Vox TV visited Tari in the Southern Highlands Province, Tufi in the Northern Province, the Sepik river in East and West Sepik provinces, Madang in Madang Province and Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province over the last three weeks.
She said Vox TV had wanted to do this travel show featuring PNG two years ago but could not do so due to various obstacles they had to overcome in order to get a permit to visit PNG.
Footage from the 47th Annual Goroka Show will be part of the program aired in Vox’s weekly travel show titled Vox Tours Show.

Her presentation was backed up by the research, which was conducted by the IRS in the southern Kyrghyzstan in March 1998.
Feruz noted that according to official Tajik sources, guerrillas who invaded the Batken oblast of Kyrghyzstan last year were reported to be in Afghanistan.
