Edward Burnett Tylor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sir Edward Burnett Tylor (October 2, 1832–January 2, 1917), the English anthropologist, was born at Camberwell, London, the son of Joseph Tylor and Harriet Skipper.
Alfred Tylor, the geologist, was an elder brother.
Tylor's association with Christy greatly stimulated his awakening interest in anthropology, and his visit to Mexico, with its rich prehistoric remains, led him to make a systematic study of the science.

Tylor, who in treating of the beliefs, customs, or superstitions of mankind, seems often to be quite satisfied that he has done all that is required when he has shown that a similar or identical belief or custom exists elsewhere.
For Tylor, however, the knowledge produced in the domestic realm should remain private, since its trustworthiness was fatally undermined by the threat of (mostly feminine) physical or psychological disorder or (lower-class-based) social malfunction, that is, fraud.
Tylor himself was uncertain; he could only "hope" that if the belief in witchcraft might reappear in the civilized world, it would "appear in a milder shape than heretofore" (1873/I: 141), and he shared this anxiety about the containment of magic with many of his contemporaries (Pels 1999c).

Thus, for example, Tylor's theorizing was motivated in significant measure by his disagreements with degenerationist theories of the religions of so-called "savages." He hoped to replace such views with an evolutionary, progressivist perspective on the development of human religiosity.
Tylor's evolutionary account, as is well known, largely deals with the development of what he calls "the intellectual...side of religion" (1958 [1873, 1871], II:444-445), to the explicitly confessed near-neglect of other important aspects of religion.
Tylor's confidence that he can understand the savage mind because it is essentially rational is the basis for his conviction that he can understand the continuity of human religiousness from the earliest times in which it affords a glimpse of itself.

Tylor is (from what we can tell) a bum on the street when he sees an ad on the TV to join the millitary featuring a cute girl.
The interplay between the characters here is great, and for once we have a comedy that doesn't rely so much on super-deformed slapstick humor (not that there's anything wrong with that) but is still just as funny and interesting as any of them.
Crispin Freeman makes a perfect Tylor (I was SURE he'd be too flowery in his speech patterns), and fan favorite Lisa Oritz (AKA Linna Inverse) shines as the young Queen Azalyn.

So animism must be regarded as a philosophy rather than as an original religious faith, since it is based on an "explanation of phenomena rather than an attitude of mind toward the cause of these phenomena" (EB, 11th edition, article "Animism," and compare Hoffding, Philosophy of Religion, 1906, 138).
It seems probable that primitive historic man saw in everything that moved an active soul, and that he saw in every extraordinary thing in earth or heaven the expression of a supernatural power.
Those earlier investigators were without extended chronological data, and although ingenuity was exercised in systematizing the beliefs and customs of modern savages, it was necessarily impossible always to determine in this way which were the most primitive cults.
