E-6 MERCURY (TACAMO) - United States Nuclear Forces
With the Navy order for TACAMO versions of the 707-320B airframe, the E-6A designation was assigned for these airframes, to be built on the E-3A line.
Based on the study results, the TACAMO replacement program got under way; the first two of a planned buy of 16 were ordered in 1984.
Besides the command link to the ballistic missile submarines, the E-6A TACAMO aircraft is involved in a joint mission, to provide the vital communication link from the National Command Authority (NCA) to all strategic forces.

  TACAMO
TACAMO actually refers to a system of survivable communications links designed to be used in nuclear war to maintain communications between the decision-makers (the National Command Authority) and the triad of strategic nuclear weapon delivery systems.
The acronym was coined in 1961 and the first aircraft modified for TACAMO testing was a Lockheed KC-130 Hercules which in 1962 was fitted with a VLF transmitter and trailing wire antenna to test communications with the fleet ballistic missile submarines[?].
The aircraft were upgraded to the E-6 Mercury from 1990 (after a contract had been agreed in 1983) and the E-6 was upgraded to the dual-role E-6B from 1998.

 OLD TACAMO
I was looking at the web site and am very glad that some TACAMO Sailors care as much as I do about preserving the history of what we all did to help win the Cold War.
His son, a young airman just starting in TACAMO was a part of the presentation of Old Glory to the Senior.
The fix for this delayed the introduction of the Merc's to TACAMO and so Luke and several other Herc crews got PLE'd to maintain airborne coverage in place of the Merc crews that could go up yet, due to no aircraft.

The aircraft depicted in the jpeg you forwarded is a Boeing E-6 TACAMO command and control aircraft.
It has NO room for extra fuel to spray, and the fuel vents were relocated to the inboard points because of all the antennas that are now in the wingtips.
The fuel dump valves on the E-6 Tacamo are exactly as pictured, and this aircraft is dumping fuel, which mists out as seen when this is done.

 WHAT
During transmission the aircraft flies in a continuous tight circle, which results in over 70 percent of the wire hanging straight down and acting as a relatively efficient vertical antennae.
TACAMO role is fulfilled in Russian Navy by a variant of Tupolev-142 Bear-J. Attention has now shifted to laser based underwater communications.
There is an optical window in the blue-green part of the laser spectrum, which enables transmission to penetrate the ocean at substantial distance.

 Tinker AFB
This particular aircraft is significant because it represents the unique history of TACAMO "Hercs." It was first assigned to VQ-4 in early 1976 to replace an aircraft lost in a mishap in 1972.
It was operated during Desert Storm as a "trash and cattle" hauler by VQ-4 until the TACAMO mission tempo for VQ-4 increased.
The aircraft now serves as a symbol of the hard work and dedication of the many TACAMO sailors who worked in and on such aircraft for nearly 20 years of 100% coverage of airborne in support of the nation's Cold War deterrence mission.

Although the task of nuclear deterrence may not appear to be a symmetric counter to global terrorism, the continuity of TACAMO operations over the coasts signify that the country’s defensive capabilities have not faltered.
The remaining “A” model aircraft will be refitted for this mission soon, as both models continue to execute the traditional TACAMO alert stance on both the East and West Coasts.
TACAMO maintainers and E-6 crews will continue to operate with vigilance, weaving a defensive umbrella in the skies above the country.

The aircraft fly from these bases to a variety of predetermined orbit points over the respective oceans and hold there in a series of slow 25°-40° banks for six to ten hour missions; with in-flight refueling mission times can be extended.
The VLF system was repeatedly upgraded to improve signal strength; by 1971 TACAMO IV incorporated a 200 kW transmitter and dual antenna, however, actual transmission power and capabilities remain classified.
The E-6 aircraft initially was based on the Boeing 707, then flown as the Air Force KC-135 but it was extensively upgraded to meet the needs of the TACAMO mission.
