Tactical Air Navigation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The TACAN antenna is the highest antenna in the center of the image.
The bearing unit of TACAN is more accurate than a standard VOR since it makes use of a two frequency principle, with 15 Hz and 135 Hz components.
A TACAN system theoretically might be placed on a building, a large truck, an airplane, or a ship, and be operational in a short period of time.

 GUIDANCE, NAVIGATION AND CONTROL
The onboard TACAN sets are used for external navigation and for the orbiter during the entry phase and return-to-launch-site abort.
Since the TACAN units are placed in groups of 10 and 10 TACAN units from one group (primary) form the TACAN half of the minitable, the secondary and alternate runways should be from the same group as the primary runway to assure TACAN coverage.
TACAN range and bearing cannot be used to produce a good estimate of the altitude position component, so navigation uses barometric altitude derived from the air data system probes, which are deployed by the fight crew at approximately Mach 3.

 Tacan navigation system
"Tacan" stands for "Tactical Air Navigation" and is a system which, working in the u.h.f.
There is no limit to the number of aircraft which can simultaneously obtain bearing information from a Tacan beacon but no more than 100 aircraft at a time can obtain distance information.
The major claim of the Tacan system is that by employing an antenna pattern comprising a main lobe and "ninth harmonic" lobes a nine-fold increase in accuracy is obtained.

Now when you enter a tacan channel in the system, you have to use the HSI (Horizontal Situation Instrument) to navigate.
and then it's position is given by a radial from a known tacan in the vincinity and by a distance indication given by the DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) which is in the up left corner of the instrument.
With a little experience, you'll be able to skip the overflying of the known Tacan station.

Tacan information except in A/A mode is presented on the horizontal situation indicator (HSI), the attitude director indicator (ADI), and the head-up display.
TACAN CONTROLS The controls for tacan operation are on the ILS/tacan control panel on the left console, on the steering mode panel on the main instrument panel, and on the HSI.
T/R Tacan receives bearing signals from the tacan ground station, and in addition, the tacan interrogates the tacan ground station to establish distance from the aircraft to the ground station.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, there isn't an FS2000 TACAN radio out there that can pick up these signals for us...however there is a little trick that I discovered that makes these TACAN stations useful.
To use a TACAN frequency you will need a Flight Information Handbook, or other equivalent which lists paired frequencies for TACAN channels (see the list at the end of the article).
Now, the TACAN at Vandenberg is channel 59Y, so by looking that channel up in the handbook it gives a equivalent frequency of 112.25 MHz...and presto, we now have DME to go with the ILS so long as we tune the 112.25 into our NAV2 radio and switch our DME guage to Nav2.
