TADS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Recently, TADS received a major overhaul with the release of TADS 3, which is a complete rewrite of the TADS engine, only retaining the platform-dependent code to ease porting.
While TADS 3 is still subject to last-minute changes, and while its documentation is incomplete, the TADS 3 compiler and interpreter are stable and they have been ported to the Unix, Macintosh and DOS platforms.
Whereas the TADS 1 and 2 VMs had to parse the commands entered by the player, before sending the results on to the game, TADS 3 employs a more general-purpose virtual machine, where the command-parsing is done by the game code itself, akin to Inform.

 New Features in TADS 3
TADS 3 has an automatic garbage collector that keeps track of which objects are accessible and which have become unreachable, and automatically deletes unreachable objects.
TADS 3 uses a better random number generator algorithm than past versions, and provides more convenient access: the random number generator can randomly pick a value from a list or from an argument list, in addition to its traditional generation of a random integer.
TADS 3 has new syntax that lets you handle arguments to a varying-argument function as a list, and to pass a list value as a varying-argument list to a function.

TADS Tip 2: The Subtleties of Whitepsace
The ones that TADS uses are the space, the newline, the tab and the line break.
Thus we have escaped the space, forcing it to be ignored by the TADS whitespace formatter.
So you can see that TADS followed that rule: there was one space (we could have put in a dozen and ended up with the same result) and TADS reformatted it to have two spaces.

TADS vs Inform - a (vaguely) in-depth comparison
In fact, TADS games currently can't even tell if they are being run on a graphics or non-graphics interpreter, which may cause problems (but this is going to be changed soon, so soon that I'm mentioning it here and not in the "future issues" section).
It would be possible to add string compression to TADS games which would reduce their size by a fair amount, and it would be also possible to reduce the size of their save files (although TADS' true dynamic creation makes this more difficult).
TADS' base foreign language support may change, though I'm a little doubtful if this is a top priority due to (as far as I see) little demand.

 TADS Overview
TADS is a powerful object-oriented language with high-level string and list datatypes and syntax specially designed to make adventure game object definitions concise and readable.
The TADS source code was originally designed for easy portability and has had its portability honed with years of experience on a wide range of systems.
Currently, the official version of TADS is TADS 2.5.x (the x is a minor patch number that changes from time to time; it signifies only minor changes for bug fixes and small features, not major feature upgrades).

TADS was the first IF language to gain wide acceptance and has remained popular ever since.
TADS is programmer-friendly in several ways: the developer kit includes a fantastically useful graphical debugger, and the syntax will be more familiar to developers with a background in C-like languages.
TADS 2 has several serious limitations: the parser and library are inseparable, making non-English games nearly impossible, and no game can compile without a standard IF game loop in place, limiting the possibility of true experimentation.
