Because of the severity of Elvis' health problems at the time the special was shot, Elvis was far from his best in the way he looked and the way he performed, though there are some truly brilliant moments in the footage.
In the meantime, we truly understand, respect and appreciate and share on so many levels the feelings of those fans who want the 1977 material released.
In the meantime, we continue to use clips from the 1977 special as appropriate for historical context and completeness in documentary projects and exhibits.

Elvis's first television appearance in more than eight years would be a Christmas special for which NBC would pay $250,000 and they would pay $850,000 to produce an Elvis movie and an additional $25,000 for the film's music.
He went on after Elvis's special to be nominated six times for Emmy Awards and received one for his work on the 1977 "The Barry Manilow Special." In recent years he has produced and directed numerous Disney on Ice specials.
It was the version recorded for this special that was used for the highly successful 2002 remix that has since been used in movies and as the theme song for the TV series "Las Vegas." Billy Strange and Mac Davis wrote "Nothingville" and "Memories", both of which were used in the 1968 TV special.

I had speculated here that the NBC censors had made demands on the show's producers to tame down the Bedelia beach scene to make it suitable for American TV and therefore the scene had to be reshot.
It has one of the aforementioned eyes mounted on it and describes TCB as a short lived 1969 television show that starred a Harley Sportster.
In essence it is simply an homage to what was a very special TV show from a very special time, that for some unexplicable reason has remained lodged in the few remaining brain cells of this old hippie, and I've discovered that I'm not alone.

Amazingly enough, right-wing mouthpiece Bill O'Reilly came to the Chicks' defense, opining on his show recently that radio "has no reason not to play it." Monday afternoon, TCB marshaled a battalion of MySpace friends to request it at KASE 101, the Austin country frequency that regularly dwarfs its competition in the ratings.
Those that got through were told the song had not been added to the station's playlist "yet." Since it's been out for six weeks, that probably means "never." Other outlets have been kinder.
Several special events are planned to mark the festival's 35th anniversary, including a closing-night concert by the Festival Memorial Orchestra and soloists Jimmy LaFave, Albert and Gage, and Trout Fishing in America.
