Understanding TCP/IP addressing and subnetting basics
When you configure the TCP/IP protocol on a Microsoft Windows computer, an IP address, subnet mask, and usually a default gateway are required in the TCP/IP configuration settings.
For a TCP/IP wide area network (WAN) to work efficiently as a collection of networks, the routers that pass packets of data between networks do not know the exact location of a host for which a packet of information is destined.
TCP/IP network problems are often caused by incorrect configuration of the three main entries in a computer's TCP/IP properties.

 tcpip config params
This parameter is needed only if you are running more than one ODI driver to support TCP/IP (for example, a workstation that uses both an Ethernet connection and a SLIP/PPP serial link, or a network gateway machine with two network boards).
If you configure multiple ODI drivers for TCP/IP, the number of raw sockets you specify is the total shared by all drivers.
If these parameters are missing, the TCP/IP Transport software expects their values to be supplied by a BOOTP server.

 TcpIp
TCP/IP is what breaks these network messages up and reassembles them.
TCP/IP also directs the messages across the network from the source computer to the destination computer.
TCP/IP is divided into four layers, each responsible for a particular task.

A Discussion of NetWare TCP/IP Issues
There were three versions of TCPIP as of February 2004: null (no encryption, for non-VPN servers), domestic (128-bit encryption for NBM 3.7 or earlier), and nici (BorderManager 3.8 VPN).
The very latest TCPIP patch is most likely dependent on the very latest NetWare service pack being installed first, and may not work if you are one patch behind.
If you then install TCPIP patches afterwards, the patches should see that an encryption version of TCPIP is installed, and update TCPIP with an encryption version and not a Null version.

However, TCPIP will not return the buffers until DECnet closes the socket, and DECnet will not close the socket until its buffers are returned.
The soultion to this standoff was to introduce code into routine, sofree(), to recognize this particular case, and to unconditionally free buffers waiting in the send sockbuf of such a socket.
Solution: Fixed TCPIP not to mishandle a redundant ICMP REDIRECT packet in which the source and gateway addresses are the same.

TCP/IP is the basis for most UNIX systems, which are gaining the largest share of the operating system market (other than desktop single-user machines, such as the PC and Macintosh).
TCP/IP uses a 32-bit address to identify a machine on a network and the network to which it is attached.

In the previous version of the TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS IMAP server the upload functionality was disabled due to an underlying bug in OpenVMS which caused severely degraded system performance when IMAP tried to upload messages.
This can happen when the DHCP client is booted, receives an IP address, operates for some period of time with this address, shuts down and then does not reboot until after the lease on the assigned IP address has expired.
The next time the DHCP client is invoked to configure the interface the server may possibly assign your host the same IP address and also give your host the new name it asked for.

We could use either NETBIOS or TCPIP here but usually use TCPIP because it is compatible with the Internet.
You could solve this problem by registering an alias in the Domain Name Server that tells the system that the Notes Server Name is an alias for the TCPIP Name.
An easier solution if you only have a few clients, is to place the IP number of the server in the Destination Server Address of the Server Connection Document (in the advanced section) in the client's Name and Address Book.
