THX 1138 is easily a score to study as a film music historian and enthusiast, but is hardly palatable for casual listeners.

"THX 1138." George Lucas, the cinema behemoth who permanently changed the movie industry with his sprawling space saga, started off his career directing a stark, mature science-fiction think-piece so obscure it has rarely seen the light of a projector since its creation in 1970.
The story follows factory worker THX 1138 (played by a young Robert Duvall), during a period of growing dissatisfaction with his life.
If "THX 1138" was intended to be an "artifact from the future," as Lucas has said, he certainly has done the worst to it, like trying make a meteorite more interesting by covering it in day-glo fluorescent paint and glued-on pieces of C-3PO and R2-D2.

 THX 1138 Summary
THX 1138 is a motion picture made in 1969 (but not released to theaters until 1971).
George Lucas has made three features: THX 1138, which was about the future; American Graffiti, which was about adolescents; and now Star Wars, which is a "future" film for adolescents.
Neither of the earlier pictures was distinguished for novelty or depth, but THX 1138 tried to compensate with visual and technical ingenuity, and American Graffiti found some good objective correlatives, in cinematic method, for its study of small-town teen-agers.

 THX 1138 : filmcritic.com Movie Review
George Lucas’s most grown-up piece of work is, oddly enough, his first feature from 1971, the instant classic of dystopic angst, THX 1138, inaugurating a steady reversal of artistic maturity that would culminate in the cartoonish Star Wars sequels; which is maybe where he wanted to end up all along.
The pressure of the state is brought to bear after THX stops his mandatory pill-popping (resulting in “prosecution for criminal drug evasion”) and another worker, SEN 5241 (Donald Pleasence) tries to come between THX and LUH, he has to make a break for freedom.
What makes the horror of THX 1138 so all-enveloping is that there is simply no villain, nobody to blame for the fascist spectacle, a bloodied prisoner surrounded by guards with calmly droning voices, dead workers carted away like so many sacks of flour.

The flipside of Star Wars' carefree adventure, THX 1138 was a downbeat experience little seen at the time, but its reputation has grown due to its famous creator and its copious merits: innovative editing and graphic design, fascinating sound montage (by Murch), and a mesmerizing look-and-feel.
FSM's premiere release of the THX 1138 soundtrack is a fascinating musical journey of Schifrin's score and source music, ranging from avant garde soundscapes to cheeky plays on his Latin jazz of the '60s.
